Torchwood: Miracle Day BFI screening round up
The first episode of the new Torchwood series was screened at the BFI Southbank earlier tonight, where fans and critics were given the chance to see Jack and Gwen back in action ahead of its worldwide premiere next month!
According to SFX, the opening episode, which is called The New World, has a different style to previous series, but is still “very, very good” and very “Torchwoody”. BBC News Entertainment Correspondent, Lizo Mzimba, meanwhile, has described it as a “great first episode”.
According to James Moran, who wrote episodes for Series 2 and Series 3, the episode is “clever, fun, exciting, and BIG”, and AOL TV agrees that it is “utterly brilliant”.
The cast were interviewed by the press before the premiere, and afterwards there were yet more questions thrown their way as they took part in a Q&A session, during which John Barrowman promised that the new series offers “a real insight into how Jack and Gwen feel about each other”, as well as more details about Jack’s past…
So, an immensely positive reaction overall, and it all just goes to make us even more excited about seeing it (whenever that might be…)! In the US, it airs from 8th July on Starz, and from 9th July in Canada (SPACE) and Australia (UKTV). Not long to go now!
The promotion continues as Bill Pullman will be a guest on BBC Breakfast tomorrow.

Well, we’ll find out some of that when Torchwood does come back!
I agree with everyone else that it would be nice to have an airdate; I know it’s not typical for the BBC to announce airdates weeks in advance, but the fact that US fans have their date whilst the UK doesn’t is kind of irritating. And it will be slightly odd to be on the other side of the coin when it’s the UK waiting to see an episode that’s already aired in the US.
To say that Doctor Who – a 100% UK show gets pretty much simulcast over the pond its too unfair that we have to wait so long. One week, fine but at least a fortnight is crazy! This is meant to be 50% BBC 50% Starz but from air times to trailers it seems that Starz has far more control over new Torchwood
As an American Whovian, I have to chuckle a little. We used to have to wait months or even years — or, in many cases, not watch it at all unless we had a supplier willing to provide us with bootleg copies. Season 1 of the new Dr Who wasn’t aired here until after it had *finished* in the UK, and back then, not even BBC America was interested. I bought the DVDs (and a region-free DVD player to play them) before it ever aired in the US.
So I admit to a little schadenfreude.
It would be better if they ran it the same day for everyone, though, and in an increasingly digital world, the idea of staging releases across different nations will become increasingly quaint (not to mention suicidal; if shows don’t release simultaneously or nearly so, they’ll start to lose viewers to the pirates).
