As the Torchwood team is reunited, Jack realises he’s the most vulnerable man on Earth, as a flight to the US becomes a desperate fight for survival.
Now we’re back together, together, I wanna show you, that Miracle Day is oh so true…
Jack and Gwen have been reunited (hurrah!), and for the old friends, it was business as usual in the latest episode. The new series continued as the human race tried to make sense of the recent worldwide phenomenon. Were they any closer to getting their much needed answers? As chaos escalated, it became clear it may not be a miracle after all…
Meanwhile, with the only two remaining members of the Torchwood team summoned to the US, Jack was out for an answer of his own, one to explain his sudden vulnerability, and Gwen bid farewell to her family, realising you can never leave Torchwood behind.

Another fantastic episode! The first few minutes alone are brilliant but I really can’t stand another second of Jilly Kitzinger. I was actually siding with Oswald in that scene in the lift. Looking forward to Dead of Night!
But this episode hasnt been aired yet!! has it? btw i live in the UK
I thought it was another great episode,loved the end really made me laugh,she deserved it!!
Loved it, loved the ending, I LOVE Gwen when she’s furious because she has the most fantastic one-liners. Towards the end of the episode I started coming around to Rex (I thought he was way too arrogant before), and I think Jilly Kitzinger is annoying but I can’t figure out if she’s a “good guy” or “bad guy” yet. (Don’t tell me! “Spoilers” )
Basically, I won’t say anything else because it’s not out in the UK yet, but my only complaint is too much CIA and not enough TW! Hopefully this changes in future episodes!
It may be a bit Americanized, there’s no denying that (and what do you expect) but it still has the adrenaline pumping Torchwood feel and I LOVE IT!
It’s SO good to have TW back! heehee
It feels like they are still trying to introduce the characters in this episode and that seems to be holding up the plot a little bit. Though, the fact it is not progressing that fast could be good in the long run as we can get a good feel for the new characters. The plane scenes did feel a bit dragged out but it got going once Jack got poisoned. Gwen really shone throughout this episode and had some great lines. In the first episode I wasn’t that sure on Oswalds character really but I think he was great in this episode. I really felt sorry for him when he broke down on the interview. The scenes in the Medical conference were great but I think they were a little bit too short and could have done with a bit more focus. I’d rate this episode 7/10 as I don’t think it was quite as good as last weeks. I’m hoping that next weeks picks up some pace!
After reading a shameful amount of reviews for and against Americanized Torchwood, I realize where the problem is. Gwen, poor Welsh woman, is the only true overseas character from Torchwood left. (Jack’s American or an ex-time agent if you want to be technical.) Yes we miss the back and forth small town feel the show had in Cardiff with its Rift and its weevils. But most of all we miss the friendships the little band of plucky fighters had.
Since they’ve Americanized the show it feels more like “every man for himself” and “trust no one” which seems to be the mantra for every supposedly great show we have in the States. And to keep it interesting we blow up a few things. Why, because otherwise even the most beloved show won’t get invited back next year.
But that being said, we have what we have. We can either enjoy the new Torchwood or we can learn to live without it because incase you all forgot, BBC is slowly slicing away at the whole Doctor Who franchise. And everyone of you that’s depressed about Torchwood not being what it used to be need to remember that it was almost not at all.
@Grace
I think that’s where the problem lies. Those who dislike American Torchwood would’ve preferred the series to have ended with Children of Earth rather than continue as it is. Personally, I think it is still a fantastic show despite the few flaws it’s gained through its new home.
I personally feel that the volume of flaws torchwood has gained are far more than a ‘few’. Barrowman and Myles are utterly *fantastic* as always but that certain edge of UK humor and character interaction has been replaced with the typical american ’spell it all out’ approach. Subtle, Implied themes have been evacuated from the program for.. well, you know which audience.
I’d of done a Victorian Torchwood personally (with Gwen and Jack thrown back in time perhaps). That would of allowed lots of interesting plot options tying in with historic events, people etc the writers could of had a lot of fun with it. Now they’re stuck playing the ratings game in the US. Expect explosions, cameos and cancellation.
This episode is everything that Torchwood is known for – action, drama, strong willed women, Cpt. Jack, Gwen, Rhys, Sgt Andy…. Glad to see it back. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses.
This episode felt much more Like Torchwood than then first episode despite it being set mostly on a plane although it is still millenia away from the complete Brilliance of Old Torchwood
Im Still liking the Esther character most of the new americans although now we have had more of a look at Oswauld Danes I am liking him more and more. Im not so sure about the Doctor and Jilly Kitzinger, both just annoy me and I hope that either changes or we see less of them. The Rex character still seems to grate against everyone and everything else (and I feel this defines the American Attitude towards the series to be honest)
Gwen Cooper…. What a Purely Brilliant creation – not to mention Jack Harkness please, I hope to God they dont change them in the slightest
But For all my disagreements with the new torchwood – That hour still flew by and I wouldnt have spent it ANY OTHER WAY!
@phibermon
I think your idea of Victorian Torchwood is absolutely fantastic – It could keep its whole mantra alive while being something that I think every real Torchwood fan wants to find out more about
Yeah, I mean, I enjoyed tonight’s 2nd episode for what it was. I didn’t feel anything negative whilst watching it, but it does feel quite American. I was thinking as I watched how it reminded me of one of those American police shows. I can’t think of a proper reference right now, but it definitely reminded me of something.
The woman at the end with the broken neck, I guess, was meant to be funny but I suppose it wasn’t my sort of humour.
Is it Torchwood though?……..Last week, I felt that it was but after Episode 2, where everything moved to America, I’m not quite feeling Torchwood anymore
Having said that, I am looking forward to the next episode
@JC
Next week’s episode might be better as it does feature a bit of Wales (IIRC from the Starz trailer).
I agree with Adam – I think it feels a bit slow. That hour would have been done in ten minutes back in s2. The quality of the writing is good as ever – the attention to detail is amazing – but the overall storylining might be a little too slow. We’re also running a risk of Mary Sue type characters with Vera Juarez – she knows everything, she comes up with everything, she’s reliable, she’s funny…
That said, Gwen and Eve Myles are fantastic throughout. You get the feeling that the writers are relishing her Welsh-ness in the midst of all this American-ness. Furthermore, Jilly Kitzinger and Oswald Danes are both played with interesting levels to them, and Esther is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise very harsh and manipulative cast.
I look forward to more, but hope it speeds up a bit.
@TE
That’s cool, I’m looking forward to the next episode. It’s keeping me interested, which is important
I’m really not a fan of American television (sorry if that offends anyone) but I’m loving Torchwood. Yes, it’s moved over the sea, but at its heart, it’s still the same show.
The concept of ‘Miracle Day’ has been really well thought through. Very interesting dilemmas. It’s all the detail about further complicatios that’s really interested me. Oh, and what the hey could make everyone immortal… and have the power to defy Rose and the Time Vortex by making Jack mortal?! Hooked!
Oh, and is anyone else missing the old theme tune?
I don’t understand this feeling people have about it “not being Torchwood”. It feels perfectly Torchwood to me. The only difference is more characters sound like Jack, is all. The setting is irrelevant. Was the radio play “Lost Souls” any less Torchwood because it took place in Switzerland? I don’t think so.
As for the new characters, Oswald has potential to be one of the most interesting characters in Who franchise history. Jilly continues the franchise’s success rate with hot redheads though I’m not sure what to make of her. Too coincidental her showing up where she did. Rex I’m finding a bit annoying; I hope they calm him down a bit. The doctor character is fine, played straight, though occasionally comes off a bit too “ER”.
The only concern I have is that we’re once again back to having characters disbelieving in aliens. Yet Children of Earth established everyone knew by this point because of Journey’s End. And no, The Big Bang didn’t undo everything because otherwise Gwen wouldn’t have been on the run. Still, there’s 8 episodes to go, and I wouldn’t put it past them to name-drop Daleks or “planets in the sky” in some suitably cheeky fashion.
^ I forgot Esther in my note above, even though she’s my favorite new character and very much feels like how Gwen was at the start of her time with Torchwood. She’s in my mind the character most likely to continue on with the team (along with the doctor).
lOVED THIS ONE! So much better than the first episode. It had the same pace, but was more tightly plotted and allowed us to understand Esther and Rex. Gwen was amazing- ‘I’m Welsh’. That CIA woman was brilliant, broken neck was a jaw dropping moment and I loved Gwen and JAck’s reaction to it. Better than last weeks, hope it stays this good.
