Richard Curtis has spoken to BBC’s Entertainment Correspondent, Lizo Mzimba, about what it has been like writing an episode of Doctor Who.
Last week, various tabloids reported the leaked news that Curtis had signed up to pen his own story for the upcoming fifth series, and it was officially confirmed by his agent later that day.
And now that it’s all out in the open, Curtis is free to talk about his latest job, and has dropped a few hints about what his story will entail!
“I can tell you that it’s set in the past, that it features somebody famous, and that it features something very nasty,” he said. “I hope it’ll be both scary and funny, and a little bit touching.”
He continued: “Writing Doctor Who is such a joy. Apparanetly, I started over-writing the Doctor a bit. Steven Moffat came to me and said ‘He doesn’t talk like that! He’s formal, he’s modern!’, so I’ve crushed it down. It’s very fun.”
And the acclaimed writer, who is best known for his comedy films and TV programmes, promises that the adventure will have a laugh here and there too.
“There are slices of comedy in it,” he revealed. “I’ve been aware that, because the plot is so strong, I can fool around and frighten. I just wrote a chase today, which is the most fun I’ve ever had.”
Curtis’ episode will be filmed in November. Series 5 of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as his companion, Amy Pond, is due to air on BBC One from Spring 2010.
