The name’s Gogh… Vincent van Gogh!

October 8th, 2009

richard_curtis_newRichard Curtis has revealed the identity of the famous historical figure that the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond will be meeting in his episode of Doctor Who next year.

Last month, it was confirmed that Curtis had signed up to pen an episode for the upcoming fifth series, and on the day of the announcement, the acclaimed writer said that all he could say about his story was that it would feature somebody well-known from the past.

And in a recent interview with Shortlist, Curtis revealed that that well-known figure will be none other than Vincent van Gogh - one of the most famous artists of all time!

“I wanted to write something my kids would like,” he told the magazine. “I’ve got Van Gogh stabbing a monster.”

He added: “Someone from the BBC just sent me a picture of my monster. I had to decide if it was yellow enough.”

The fifth series of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, is currently being filmed in Cardiff and is due to air on BBC One next year. The brand new logo was unveiled on Tuesday.

Richard Curtis: “Writing Who is such a joy”

September 15th, 2009

richard_curtis_newRichard Curtis has spoken to BBC’s Entertainment Correspondent, Lizo Mzimba, about what it has been like writing an episode of Doctor Who.

Last week, various tabloids reported the leaked news that Curtis had signed up to pen his own story for the upcoming fifth series, and it was officially confirmed by his agent later that day.

And now that it’s all out in the open, Curtis is free to talk about his latest job, and has dropped a few hints about what his story will entail!

“I can tell you that it’s set in the past, that it features somebody famous, and that it features something very nasty,” he said. “I hope it’ll be both scary and funny, and a little bit touching.”

He continued: “Writing Doctor Who is such a joy. Apparanetly, I started over-writing the Doctor a bit. Steven Moffat came to me and said ‘He doesn’t talk like that! He’s formal, he’s modern!’, so I’ve crushed it down. It’s very fun.”

And the acclaimed writer, who is best known for his comedy films and TV programmes, promises that the adventure will have a laugh here and there too.

“There are slices of comedy in it,” he revealed. “I’ve been aware that, because the plot is so strong, I can fool around and frighten. I just wrote a chase today, which is the most fun I’ve ever had.”

Curtis’ episode will be filmed in November. Series 5 of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as his companion, Amy Pond, is due to air on BBC One from Spring 2010.

richard_curtis_newIt has now been officially confirmed that Richard Curtis will be writing an episode for the upcoming fifth series of Doctor Who!

The news was first brought to light by The Sun newspaper this morning, and was soon picked up by various other sources. But now the writer’s agent has announced that the rumours are, indeed, true!

Curtis is acclaimed for his films such as Love Actually, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and, more recently, The Boat That Rocked. His television credits include The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, and Mr. Bean, but there are no details regarding his Doctor Who episode as of yet. All we know is that it will feature a monster who will do battle with ‘a famous historical figure’. Exciting stuff!

So, from what we’ve seen from filming so far, and with Steven Moffat penning episodes as head writer and Curtis now onboard, it’s shaping up to be quite a series! Roll on 2010!

Richard Curtis to write for Series 5?

September 8th, 2009

richard_curtisRichard Curtis has apparently announced that he has signed up to write an episode for the eagerly-anticipated fifth series of Doctor Who.

The acclaimed writer, whose credits include the hits such as Love Actually, Notting Hill, The Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder, confirmed the news to The Sun. He told the tabloid that he agreed to pen the story to impress his children, who are, naturally, massive fans of the show.

“It’s tremendously good fun and a treat for my children,” he explained. “These days the things you can watch together as a family are much fewer so when you get something like Doctor Who or The X Factor it is such a pleasure to sit down as a family.”

But as fans have come to expect by now, anything regarding the new series, which is currently in production in Cardiff, is shrouded in secrecy, and Curtis is remaining tight-lipped about what exactly his story will entail, but he did reveal that it will feature a monster (no surprises there, then!), and that the monster will do battle with ‘a famous historical figure’.

His cryptic words have sparked inevitable speculation that one of his most famous characters, Sir Edmund Blackadder, from Blackadder, played by Rowan Atkinson, will be making an appearance in the episode.

While the news is just about set in stone, please bear in mind that no Series 5 writers (apart from head writer Steven Moffat) have been officially confirmed by the BBC.
