Silences, Rivers and Songs – Series 6 discussion
It was in The Eleventh Hour we were first told of the mysterious silence, but we’re still no closer to finding out what it is, or, more importantly, what’s behind it…
Steven Moffat has promised us that all of our questions will be answered in Series 6, and we’ve been left with plenty of clues to dissect until it hits our screens! What ominous figure could possibly blow up the TARDIS, and what could be their motives for doing it? We’ve also heard what’s seemingly their voice – does it sound at all familiar?
Could it have anything to do with River Song, who’s identity we’ll also discover next year? In The Big Bang she told the Doctor that everything will change when he finally learns who she is – not the most inviting of prophecies, and we’re sure you’ve all got your own weird and wonderful theories whizzing aimlessly through your Doctor Who obsessed minds. So, it’s about time we gave you somewhere to share them, isn’t it?
Feel free to speculate the remaining nights until Christmas away on this post, a link to which will be posted on the sidebar so you can check back to see what our other visitors make of this ever-growing series arc. People say silence is a virtue, but something tells us things will be far from virtuous for the Doctor when this particular one takes over…
All I feel i can contribute to this is what i’ve heard, what River really can’t be, or is highly unlikely.
River being blood related to the Doctor [including being the future doctor]:
The flirting and massive hints of them having a relationship just rules it out.
River being someone, eg The Rani, from the old episodes:
It would sort of give an anti-climax for viewers who are far too young to have watched it. Moffat would surely think of something much more clever and new than that, and I do remember reading an interview with him before series 5 aired where he said he’s not going to get into old story arcs or characters, excluding aliens.
Also, River being his wife is highly possible, but a bit too obvious given all the clues. Surely that’s what they want us to think. It won’t be a surprise.
What I really can’t get my head round is how Moffat said to Matt Smith that he wanted him to ‘drop the script’ when he read it, which means it’s got to be one of those ‘of course! it was so obvious!’ moments when we finally find out. I can’t stop thinking about him saying how there are so many hints in the series.
My own theories, are that River could be Gallifreyan, but not a timelord [as all timelords are gallifreyan but not all gallifreyans are time lords]. I also like the ones about Amy and River being related or the same person. It could work.
In conclusion, if river really is his wife, then it won’t be surprising, surely she has something to do with his past. But moffat doesn’t seem the type to go back into that. Never ending circle, I just can’t wait to find out.
EXTRA:
I’ve just read some previous comments. It supports the River being Amy theory and made my jaw drop when I read it. River gave Amy the empty diary, as if it was to start it. Also, Amy had no idea who the tenth doctor was because she just meets the eleventh. It explains why river didn’t know tennant and had to look him up, but doesn’t explain why she doesn’t know the timestream of eleven and has to look him up too. I understand that Amy being human and all is hard to imagine how she could be River, but, like the doctor constantly says: ‘Amy is no ordinary girl. Grew up with a timecrack in her wall’. Also, Matt Teased: ‘About Episode 7’s cliffhanger, he teases: “There’s something going on with Amy”. Anything could have happened to her. It supports also how Moffat says we’ve seen a lot of hints in this series. Okay I’ve now convinced myself it’s this, lol.
Another thing is .. in the Eleventh Hour, some old lady recognises the Doctor. At the time, I thought we would meet this lady again (in Amy’s past), and when I learnt young Amelia was returning, I was convinved of this as well. And .. it didn’t happen. So I’m guessing the story of young Amelia is not over, and the Doctor will meet her again, and this lady will meet Doctor as well.

River did know the 10th Doctor but he didn’t know her as she is someone from the future. She was looking at the Adventures and questioned him if they had been on the Adventures but it wasn’t ringing any bells cause it was too early for him. She mentioned picnic at Asgard and the Crash of the Byzantium which has now happened. River gave Amy the diary so that she would remember the Doctor and as described by the Doctor before he walked into the crack the diary showed that “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” Yes Amy isn’t ordinary as there was a crack but what is ordinary is that she remembered Rory who came back, her parents who came back and finally the Doctor. Also as the Doctor said in Flesh and Stone, no-one remembers the Cyber-King walking all over Victorian London and that Amy didn’t remember the Daleks.
@Miranda
There is also the Pond->River thing, but the rest of you have really, really confused me.
@Miranda
the whole diary thing makes soooooo much sence. i hope that is what goes on
