As more Torchwood news from yesterday’s Television Critics Association Starz panel continues to make its way online, fans of Rhys will be pleased to hear that he won’t just be appearing briefly in Series 4!

As we reported yesterday, Gwen’s husband will be back in the newly named The New World, and Blastr has posted quotes from Russell T Davies discussing the return of Kai Owen’s character. He said: “Gwen has a lovely husband called Rhys, and now a baby between the two of them.”

He continued: “The sight of Gwen Cooper with a baby in one arm and gun in the other is going to be our poster, I hope, because that’s just going to be irresistible, but I can’t imagine Gwen without him, and so he’s back. He’s a very big part of events.”

“Rhys is now ahead of the game, as it were. There are no secrets. They’re a team. It’s a really lovely thing to write in a storyline – a husband and wife team who love each other. They have fun with each other. It’s kind of sexy. It’s kind of sexy in a really unusual way. So I love that coupling. He’s right up there with the team.”

Its head writer also teased that the team will be facing “far more than just a monster” in the 10-part story, and that Captain Jack’s first appearance is “running and fighting and being brilliant”, having moved on from the guilt he felt at the end of Children of Earth.

Meanwhile, Julie Gardner has indicated that the series won’t lose its established Welsh feel, explaining: “The Welsh setting still features in a significant way as we move forwards, so we will start filming in Wales. There’ll be beautiful landscapes. Gwen Cooper is still that character. She’s still Welsh. Her story will take place in the US but also very much in the UK, so that flavor of Wales will be very apparent.”

Torchwood: The New World begins filming in the UK and the US at the start of 2011.

    The more Torchwood news that comes through, the more reassured I feel about the series.

    I’m glad Rhys is returning properly. At first I thought it would just be for a quick glimpse before Gwen packs off to america, but think he proved his worth in COE so I’m glad he’s back.

    So funny that the character orignally was only going to be in first series but was kept on and three series later he’s very much part of the team now

    @Sean
    Agreed. I love the idea of Gwen and Rhys working together. Here’s a thought, though: how are they going to play Jack coming back? Don’t question it and off we go? Or go for the heartfelt discussion? Me personally, I’d like to see the latter, mainly because I love to see characters properly tortured, which is why I loved CoE.

    This is brilliant news!
    I love what Kai Owen brings to the show and I can see Rhys and Gwen being an awesome team together. :)
    Ha! Love the sound of the poster :P I think I read somewhere that Eve Myles would find it funny holding a gun in one hand and a bottle for the baby in the other.
    I was a little worried that taking Torchwood to America would ruin the program because in my opinion part of the charm is the Welsh factor. (Even though i’m not Welsh myself.) But like others the more I read about the new series the better it sounds and i’m really looking forward to it…shame about having to wait till next year though :( . I’ll have to keep my fangirl squeels to a minimum for a while :P
