Official: S5 companion revealed!
The BBC has today put the world out of its misery by confirming the identity of the actress who will take on the role of the Doctor’s new companion in Series 5 of Doctor Who!
Karen Gillan, 21, from Scotland, is set to star alongside the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, when the programme returns to its full 13-week run next Spring.
And if Gillan looks at all familiar to you, it’s because she’s previously appeared as a soothsayer in the Series 4 episode, The Fires of Pompeii. Just like Freema Agyeman – who appeared in Series 2 as Adeola before being cast as Martha Jones in Series 3 – she’ll be making a huge leap from a small part to one of the biggest and most loved roles on British TV.
“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion,” Gillan said. “The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him - I just can’t wait to get started!”
Meanwhile, new showrunner, Steven Moffat, who will oversee Matt and Karen’s series, said: “We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it.”
He added: “A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too.”

She looks reasonably good for the part, but as with Smith, I reserve all judgement until I see her on screen.
I agree. That’s all we can do, really. She is striking though. And I like the continuation of the redhead rule!
Same here. Until we see both Matt and Karen in Series Five, I can only believe that Steven has made the correct choice by choosing a young cast who will be able to stay for a few years, in my opinion.
she looks amazing I love Steven Moffat for what he has done for who
Who did she play in the fires of pompei? did she have any lines? i dont remember her
@pirko
She played the Soothsayer at the beginning who was following the Doctor and Donna around Pompeii. Link removed.
Oh comeon, first we get the stupid ugly looking Matt Smith and now this horrible girl! Doctor Who has really messed it’s self up.
@Banjowho
I’m sorry? Do you know Karen Gillan? Have you seen her act? And since when has Matt Smith been stupid or ugly?
If you can justify your comments then I take everything back, but I refuse to believe that Doctor Who has messed itself up (yes, it’s spelt like that). The show you are referring to, under the reign of Steven Moffat and with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, has not even begun filming, so you cannot judge it like that without fair justification. Prove your comments to me, and I will take everything back, but I think you have been wildly unfair.
I Agree With The Matt Smith Bit But She Looks Great I Can’t Wait To See Her In Action
Can I please ask. In series 5, they plan to start with everything new (new doctor, new companion, new tardis exterior etc) but does that mean that they will be ignoring the past four years and starting from scratch.
I really hope they dont ignore the battle of canary whalf, the dalek invasion of 2008, the xmas star, titanic etc. as i think that would be a stupid move to ignore the shows continuity, in my opinion
Nah, i doubt they’ll hit a big reset button. It would be a big slap in the face to Chris and David if they did. Ok sure, keep the references minimal, but dont ignore it!
As for the new companion, i remeber seeing her on the Kevin Bishop show and she is absolutely stunning, and is a good little actress, as much as could come across on that show anyway.
I personally think that the Moff has made a fantastic choice, and a wise one too… i dont know if you are aware, but if you create a character, you get paid each time that character is used. If he’d used Sally Sparrow then thats one character to be used in books, audios, etc… but with the new companion, thats TWO that can be used. So if SS ever gets a book series or whatever, and the companion is used too, then thats double the money. Smart man.
@Pirko
No, of course they won’t ignore it. In the same way the Chris Ecclestone series was a “restart” but didn’t ignore everything that had gone before.
