Plans for new Cardiff Bay drama centre revealed
Plans to shape a new state of the art BBC Drama Village in Cardiff Bay, made up of television studios, ancillary accommodation and offices, have been unveiled by the BBC.
If the planning consent is granted, filming for Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, along with other dramas produced by BBC Wales, including Casualty and Pobol y Cwm, would move to the production base.
The cooporation are kick starting their plans to double the amount of television network production in Wales by 2016.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the success of BBC Wales drama production and the wider creative industries in Wales,” Director of BBC Cymru Wales, Menna Richards, said.
Production for Doctor Who and its spin offs is currently based in Upper Boat, near Pontypridd.
Sounds brill. My mate won’t be happy though. She arranged her uni lodgings purposely so she was near Upper Boat… Still, she’ll probably have left by the time Doctor Who is moved.
Another prime example of the BBC – Empire building and over charging. Why has the BBC any need to move from London to Manchester and also build a “Drama Village”? For decades the BBC has done well in White City and has other studios around the country. I suppose this is another indication as to why the Directors and people like Jonathan Ross get excessive salaries and/or bonuses.
