The Guardian has today released a brand new interview with Steven Moffat, in which he discusses the challenges he faced during his development of the forthcoming series.

“For me, Doctor Who literally is a fairy tale,” he explains. “It’s not really sci-fi. It’s not set in space, it’s set under your bed. It’s at its best when it’s related to you, no matter what planet it’s set on. You think ‘Ooh, wouldn’t it be great to do that!’ and I’m now in the fortunate position of being able to think that and make it happen.”

He goes on to confirm that it was a conscious effort not to bog down the Doctor’s new adventures with too many references to his past, as he feels this would make them feel like a sequel and “the sequel is never as good as the original”. However, he hints at a reappearance from a very familiar character at some point in the future…

“There are no past characters coming back in this series,” he reveals, ”but I imagine that kids would love to see Captain Jack meet the new Doctor.”

The new series of Doctor Who begins Saturday 3rd April on BBC One and BBC HD!

    I can understand not wanting to make TOO many references to The Doctor’s past, but I think it’s part of the character that you have to make reference to his past in some ways at least. The character has lived ten lives at this point and it can’t be as though suddenly none of that matters or counts towards anything that happens to him in the future…..or the past……..or the present

    Still, as he said, he doesn’t want to flood the show with references to his past, and I can understand that, I think he’ll try and get the balance right.

    But there are loads of past characters coming back: river song, daleks, weeping angels, cybermen, and silurians.

    @The Daines
    Right, but I think he means 9 and 10’s companions/friends, especially since they were RTD’s characters and he pretty much wrapped up their stories.

    im sure that SOME of the companions will make a return, but this series will be about the 11th doctor, and getting to know his personality and stuff, and thats probably a teensy bit more important…
