Regeneration limit mystery to be resolved?

Many of you will be aware of the ongoing mystery surrounding the Doctor’s regeneration limit. In the Fourth Doctor classic series serial, The Deadly Assassin, it was established that Time Lords can cheat death through regenerating twelve times before they ultimately ‘run out’ of regenerations.

It’s already known that the Master has regenerated more than twelve times through various nefarious means, but the Doctor’s own lifespan has always been uncertain…

Ever since The Deadly Assassin, speculation amongst fans has been rife as to what will happen when the Doctor finally reaches his ’final’ incarnation. But Steven Moffat has hinted that, over the course of Series 5, we’ll finally be given some answers!

Speaking exclusively to Newsarama at the US Series 5 press launch in New York City, he revealed: “It’s been addressed in a very, very cheeky way by an old friend of mine and I’m not going to tell you any more about that,” before informing viewers to simply “wait and see”.

Meanwhile, regarding this year’s story arc (already the cause of much debate in our discussion!), the showrunner teased: “You’re going to have to think about it and find out what it is, but it’s in there. And that’s the one, that’s what takes us through the whole series and my god, it’s bad.”

Series 5 of Doctor Who continues this Saturday with Episode 3, Victory of the Daleks!

    they gonna continue dr who after the doctor’s final regeneration. the shows so popular, it would be devastating to end it on the thirteenth doctor.

    I want to know how they are going to handle the valeyard as well!
    I also am wondering, what if this not the original Doctor. The Master died at the end of the 8th Doctor movie by falling into the eye of harmony. The new version of the Master was not the real Master. Is this the real Doctor. In the 5 Doctor’s, the council members indicated they had found a way of giving a Timelord a new set of regenerations.

    They have to get around the regeneration limit for the sake of ratings – DW is such a Saturday night draw. Even if we end up with another hiatus (please God no) then chances are it’ll return someday as it did in 2005.

    oh it’s one thing said in who. I’m sorry but history has rewrote itself in doctor who and it always will. They should just not mention it and go on.

    I figured they would address this sooner or later. Since the Master came back, I’ve had the suspicion that during the Time War, the Time Lords found a way to circumvent the old regeneration limit. The Master said the Time Lords had “resurrected him”, and I’m also thinking that if Rassilon in The End of Time was also THE Rassilon, they found a way to bring him back to life too in order to lead them. We don’t know what kind of advances the Time Lords made during the war.

    Off course, despite it popularity, that did not stop the BBC practically giving it a year of with only 4 episodes last year. They have scrapped other programs in favour of the cheap (reality shows, which seem to be on the increase on BBC). It never bothered them in the 1980’s! (recent documents showed that even though Doctor Who was the BBC’s biggest export, they still cancelled it!). They have only just given the go ahead within the last month for season 6!
    Just have to wait and hope. Maybe they will end Doctor Who and bring along something else, like the suggested Son of Doctor Who (in the 60’s) or Young Doctor Who set during his school years.

    @Steve
    But last was a planned thing. For one thing David Tennant was involved in Hamlet, so he didn’t have the time to record a full season. Didn’t really have anything to do with the show’s popularity.
