Overnight ratings have now been released for last night, and they show that an unofficial audience of 6.2million tuned in for the BBC One debut screening of Episode 3, Victory of the Daleks, by Mark Gatiss.

This makes it the second most watched programme of the day, with 32.7% of the television share. Britain’s Got Talent managed to obtain its own victory, taking home the top spot with an audience of 10.6million, a 44% share. 231,000 watched the return of the Daleks on BBC HD.

Meanwhile, 0.59million watched the episode’s accompanying instalment of Confidential, War Games, on BBC3, and an additional 0.12million when it aired on BBC HD.

Finalized figures will be released by BARB in a couple of weeks. It’s worth pointing out that this week the BBC One ratings won’t be added with the HD statistics, as the episode wasn’t simultaneously broadcast on the channels. As always, we’ll keep you updated!

    So it’s official, Doctor Who has ‘jumped the shark’ ratings-wise. The newspapers will have a field day about the unpopularity of Matt Smith. Great scheduling, BBC.

    I have to say, it just goes to show how dumbed down tv has become with Britain’s Got Talent on ITV and at the moment Over The Rainbow on the BBC! It’s time the BBC put the licence fee into what it should be doing and scrapping the drivel of reality tv and national lottery games shows, which is a profit making organisation making millions each week.

    What really gets my goat is the amount of Matt Smith bashing that is going on. When you look at previous figures there have been worse ratings or ratings on par -
    Final Viewing Figures
    The Poison Sky 03/05/2008 6.5
    Silence in the Library 31/05/2008 6.3
    The Satan Pit 10/06/2006 6.1
    for a start.
    Don’t forget we have to wait for the final viewing figures to put this into perspective!

    The new series is good, yes, but the ratings have not dropped because of the new time or the other programs on rival channels. It’s because so much has changed tha many fans are not watching the series any more. Maybe it’s because of Matt Smith’s lack of soul in his character as the Doctor, I don’t know. Let’s wait and see what the final ratings are.

    I’m not too surprised by these ratings. After watching Victory of The Daleks last night, I was kind of expecting them to be this low.

    Some people can attack the 10th Doctor all they like, and evidently take every opportunity to do so, but despite this, the Tenth Doctor was still my Doctor and I won’t apologise for that……….but in all seriousness, this season doesn’t feel right so far. It’s not the changes, I’ve got used to the changes for the most part, there just feels like there’s, for want of a better word, an essence missing.

    The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below were enjoyable enough, they’d just started and the stories were good, if taken slow. Victory of The Daleks was when I was expecting things to be ramped up a bit, faster and action packed but keep the story, unfortunately it didn’t for me, the story of the episode fell away for me and left the episode feeling pointless.

    This said, we’re only three episodes into a 13 (17 with the games, so they say) episode series and it could get better, I genuinely hope it does.

    I’m still putting this down, in large part, to the weather, and people watching the show later. Watch how that figure jumps up when we get the officials.

    @Doctor Who
    But ’so much’ hasn’t changed, it is still immediately recognisable as the same show; if anyone has stopped watching just because the lead actor has changed, then these people are idiots.

    I think this is nothing 2 worry about. Ratings are not the best at the moement 4 any show and its not like the show will get axed because of it, remember 6th series has been comissioned!!!! and i felt last night was the real steeping stone 4 the show where i now feel it has started and that im getting into it now, yes im not over keen on new theme tune n tardis but im starting 2 even the new daleks, u just have 2 give it time instead of slating it!!!!

    @tyler
    This is a good point, it’s not as though it’s just Who down, Britains Got No Talent aside, every show is down at the moment, people are catching up with shows after they’ve been broadcast. Let’s see how far up Beast Below’s official figures land from the overnights, that should be interesting. The Eleventh Hours offical figures jumped hugely from the initial overnights.

    @JC

    Everything you said. Yes, Ten became my Doctor (along with Four) and I too make no apologies for it – I’ve watched DW since I can remember (and I can remember back as far as Two, I’m that old!)- and he really was, for me, the total package as a Doctor as far as I was concerned. I share your ‘not feeling right’ issues – It’s an enjoyable enough watch, but there is something missing. Now I know I’ll get in trouble for this, but I think it’s love… And yes, I do know that Moff is a big fan too. But for me, the absolute love DT had for it shone right through the screen – he WAS the Doctor. I never doubted that and really wouldn’t have been surprised if it came to light that yes, he really could travel in time, had a working sonic screwdriver and was able to speak Judoon fluently.

    However, we are only three eps in, so there is still time. I shall watch and see how it pans out.

    (Of course, please don’t tell Four that Ten has got up there with him – He’s been top dog for so very long ;) )

    I think people who think there is ’something’ missing are just still, really, missing Tennant himself. He was The Doc for a long time, and did a terrific job, it’s going to take a while for a lot of people to put his take on the role into the past and embrace the new guy fully. That’s natural. If there’s something missing it’s just that for the moment you’re still missing Tennant. That’s just my opinion of course, but I think there’s something in that.

    @TWWL

    Possible, but I still think there is something not quite right. However, as you say, it’s all subjective and down to the individual, so I’m willing to wait and see. For the record I never really warmed to Ecclestone either and had the same feeling, and never did warm to Davidson either…

    I really enjoyed the Eleventh Hour, I liked the Beast Below and I liked Victory of the Daleks. I think next week looks very good. We all need to remember that it is the Easter holidays the weather has been really nice. I am not worried. Stephen Moffat is a great writer. I think Matt Smith is a very good Doctor. Just keep the faith.

    @JC I do agree that something is missing with this new series and I cant quite put my finger on it. I do believe the nice weather has caused a dip in the ratings and im sure britains got talent hasnt helped.

    On another note, I am feeling (IMO ONLY) that they are going overboard with the trailers. There seems to be way too many trailers thrown at us at once. and its mainly clips we have seen already. I do hope after the weeping angels 2 parter they cut down on epic trailers for a while at least (probably until episode 12/13 or even a coming up trailer if eurovision postpones it) Dont know what anyone else thinks

    I don’t think its really Matt Smiths fault if this is an overall trend, (and its early days yet). The trouble is there’s just this tiredness about Doctor Who now. So far Steven Moffatts vision of Doctor Who has been more or less indistinguishable from Russell T Davies, ( Sonic Screwdriver, last of the timelords, jokes, whimsy, jolly music, Daleks, old monsters, continutity references, Daleks blah blah) and maybe the public are finally begining to tire of this approach. After all, this is the sixth Dalek story in five years!
    Personally I would like to see the back of the “last autority in the universe approach” and back to the travelling rebel who has to make an effort to win. Also new monsters please! proper evil enemies who can give the Doctor a run for his money as opposed to the discontented aliens and misguided humanoid bigots they fill the time with between the Daleks and Cybermen stories. I can appreciate that they don’t want to present all aliens as evil, but evil doesn’t always have to come in the shape of an alien race, use some imagination!
    That said, maybe this is just a blip and the weeping angels will restore our faith and Doctor Who will be back at the top next week.
