Arthur Darvill responds to tabloid headlines
Arthur Darvill has responded to the various tabloid headlines which claimed Karen Gillan’s peformance as Amy Pond was ’sexing up’ the series.
During an interview with WalesOnline, the actor, who the website jokes is envied by men and teenage boys across the nation for his portrayal of her on-screen fiancé, Rory Williams, defended his co-star, saying: “It’s so funny to read about all of this scandal when really she couldn’t be less like that if she tried.”
He added: “Obviously she’s completely lovely, but she’s off in her own world half the time really. She’s no femme fatale, that’s for sure!”
Darvill returns to Doctor Who in next week’s episode, The Vampires of Venice.
To be fair, it isn’t Karen that’s actually doing it, she’s just acting on a script written by Steven Moffatt, you know. Moffatt was the one that made her a kissogram and Moffatt was the one that wrote that she should kiss the Doctor and imply that he “sort her out”.
That kind of thing, if I’m honest, does make Doctor Who uncomfortable to watch, mainly because you don’t really expect it from the show. I think going backwards and forwards between the sexualised Amy Pond and the “normal” Amy Pond is risky, but so long as we see more of the normal Amy as we have so far, then I can just about tolerate it.
I agree with most of what your saying here, but i think too much is being read out of this one scene. I think that although it’s not expected of the show, if the show doesnt test the water with scenes like these then it will never be known if its going to be accepted. Overall the reaction to this scene has been pretty good, but i do agree that its a bit risky to change quite drastically beetween the “normal amy” and the “sexy amy”. I think its a good risk, but maybe it wont be done that often anyway, but overall a great episode, very entertaining, and cant wait to see vampires in venice next week.
