Noel Clarke discusses Mickey’s development
In a recent Q&A with The Guardian, Noel Clarke reveals his thoughts on Mickey Smith’s marriage to Martha Jones, which was revealed at the end of The End of Time.
“I didn’t mind,” he said. ”It was a good character arc. A lot of Mickey happened by accident. I came in and played him quite badly in season one. We didn’t know what Doctor Who was going to be. Season two, Russell started writing the character more towards me, because he knew me, and Mickey became a little bit darker.”
He adds: “So mostly by coincidence, Mickey has this arc from nerdy guy to bearded freedom fighter. I thought that was cool.”
Cool, maybe, but also completely random. Still, I guess we’d better move on from speculating about the lives of past companions…

I started writing a fanfic to try and explain how Martha went from Mrs Milligan to Mrs Smith, and decided that the neatest way to do it was to say that Tom had been killed by the Daleks. Martha finds out, Mickey’s staying at hers because he’s got nowhere else to go, he helps her through it, they end up married. Still, it’s messy.
Martha getting with Mickey was just plain silly and out of nowhere. It spoiled the ending they gave Martha, when she stopped travelling with the Doctor. Suddenly that whole relationship they were setting up as being her future was dumped for no real reason. Silly.
