Rate & Discuss: Cold Blood
It’s the most important day in the history of Earth: the dawn of a new age of harmony or the start of its final war. The Doctor must face his most difficult challenge yet, in a battle in which he cannot take sides, and on a day when nobody must die…
Now that we’re over the halfway mark of the series (already!?), things were inevitably going to take a turn for the worse, and in tonight’s episode, our heroes faced their darkest day yet, finding themselves at the forefront of an epic battle for Planet Earth…
In the conclusion to Chris Chibnall’s long-awaited Silurian two-parter, there was plenty of good old-fashioned drama, action and heartache (oh, so much heartache!) on the menu, as the human race faced the dawn of a new age of harmony, or the start of their final war. As if all of that wasn’t enough to discuss, we were also given more tantalizing teases as that pesky little crack returned, and there were yet more jaw-dropping twists and turns adding another bundle of cogs to the ever-growing finale wheel of speculation.

i will reveal what i know tommorow. and i will put a spoiler alert and leave a big gap before writing it, its only fair that those who wish to know can know and those who dont want to know, dont have to know.
Again another pretty good two parter. This is the first season where I haven’t found a single episode to be what I would classify as bad. Ups and downs with the episode as a while, but by god was Rorys demise ever a tear jerker, what a horrifying notion (even if it does only prove temporary). And the TARDIS piece, this is sheer genius storytelling (and a wonderfully far cry from just name dropping bad wolf left right and centre). I simply can’t get over what a vast improvement this season is.
Sorry to have to say it, but “Hungry Earth”/”Cold Blood” was nothing more than a remake of the Pertwee story, “The Silurians”. It’s the same basic set-up, with the same basic characters (Silurian-wise). Frankly, the original was better. Very boring guest human characters, even the young boy. The best moments of this two-part story, was the bit with the crack and Rory going the way of Adric, although more completely as now no one remembers that he ever even existed. (Wish I could not realize that Adric ever existed.) Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were both their marvelous selves, and Smith in particular looked to be truly enjoying himself, having a great time portraying the Doctor. The final moment with the Doctor holding the piece of the sign from the TARDIS – wonderful and quite suspenseful! Does this mean the entire TARDIS eventually gets destroyed? Or just the sign gets pulled off and singed a bit? I look forward to finding out!
Maybe the tardis and the doctor caused the crack/s.
Actually, I have this strange feeling that the eleventh doctor is in some alternate universe/timeline.
– Like why Amy can’t remember the daleks ‘Doomsday and Stolen Earth’ (because they never existed?)Is it just her or everyone else? The doctor did theorised in ‘Flesh and Stone’ that cracks can cause events to be unwritten. Does that mean that all that happened in Doomsday and Stolen Earth never happened?
- Like why she says the pond is a duck pond even though there’s no ducks. (maybe she knows this because she knows they used to exist even though she has never seen them or even a more far-fetched reason, maybe this is Amy’s World and everything revolves around her…even the cracks?)
Also, are the cracks…cracks in time and space or cracks in the universe? and thus in parallel universes too?
Addition; for the case of River Song, RTD once mentioned that she was ’sort of the doctor’s wife’. Maybe she was in an alternate universe? After all, the doctor did visit a universe ruled by an alternate doctor in Parallel Earth. She did kill a good man…best man she ever knew. Father Octavian says a ‘hero to many.’ Or maybe not. There’s just something about her that doesn’t seem right. ‘Spoilers’
In any case, the title of the last episode, ‘the big bang’. Does it mean the birth of the universe/s all over again (not just a very loud bang)?
26 june is a long way…and there’s still next year’s finale which SM has said, though will be a smaller story than this year’s, it will have a huge impact on the doctor himself.
Which would probably lead up to the series 7 or 8 (which is the 50th anniversary of DW) or even towards the rumoured DW movie (with plans for a possible script in the works). After all there are only 2 more regenerations left…of course, this is speculated to be overcome too, since the timelords are gone and this law will not exist anymore.
great episode…but I think that it wasn’t as good as part 1, the effects were good, the Silurians looked way to different to the origanal in my opinion however, i think that they should have made the masks that they were their actul face!
Great ending! Can’t wait for next weeks!
Does anyone know what the alien is? It looks like a werewolf…but we’ve already done werewolfs
And I think I know what Ash was going to say…

Ok well the last episode is going to be set in 2010 AND back in the Roman empire, when they owned most of Briten!
and rory has been seen! dressed as a roman soldier!
Kudos steve, That is what i was going to say, and ive got a bit more to add to it so as promised…….
SPOILERES!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!
!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!
Rory has been confirmed to appear in the finale, and he will be dressed as a roman soldier. In pictures that are due to be released between 1st and 16th of june, it shows rory in his roman soldier outfit holding amy, who is screaming for some reason. There is also 2 pictures that have been released showing the roman army at stonehenge and the doctor and his trusty sonic screwdriver at stonehenge.
I also have a theory on the bit of tardis the doctor grabs out of the crack, could be another spoiler so…………
POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!! POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!

I think the piece of tardis and the fact that ive just watched DW Confidential and matt smith has basically confirmed that the tardis explodes. I think that the big bang will be the tardis blowing up and i think that for some reason, the reason that the weeping angels and prisoner zero say “the doctor and the tardis doesnt know” is because the tardis exploding IS the cause of the cracks (hence why he picks the bit of tardis out of the crack). I also think that the reason that rory is able to come back in the finale is that the light from the crack is the heart of the tardis trying to somehow save him (as he has travelled in the tardis with the doctor and amy). And at this point i have completely run out of theories.
Oh wow.
I think it’s really sad what happend to poor Rory.
I have to admit I didn’t like him at the beginning but I think his character made a progress and I really liked him at the end. Plus he was brave enough to take the shot for the Doctor. And I must admit MS is doing just great as the Doctor, I enjoy him more and more with each episode.
There is just one thing I didn’t quiet get: Can the Doctor still remember Rory??
@Laurie
He can, yeah, the crack doesn’t seem to be affecting his memory, perhaps because he’s a Time Lord.
@Laurie
And as Amy could remember the clerics but not Rory because he was part of her world, no one is part of the Doctor’s, not really. So he’d remember anyone that happened to.
@TSG
Except maybe the Master. Which would hardly be a big loss…
So how does the tenth doctor come into play for the last episode of the current series
I think the biggest shame about this season overall is not that Matt Smith is the Doctor but the Piers and Steven are becoming Russell ME Davis and Julie Gardner wannabes!! The fact of the matter is, Steven Moffat is so much better than then put together. His stories are strong award winners. It is time to put the RTD/JG era behind and take Doctor Who in a strong new direction. Why is there any need to bring Rory back? (Surely when your dead your dead like Adric or then again an immortal like Captain Jack. Actually Adric, Peri and Rory are all on the same level of crap acting and just plain annoying!) Why was there any need to have the Silurians looking human? I get that the BBC have tightened the reigns on spending money on quality programs (They have to build their own empire!!! Why do they need to build a “Drama Village”?) in favour of crap reality TV shows like Over The Rainbow for rating grabbing. (Some thing the BBC should not be doing anyway) Doctor Who is on a very fine edge at the moment. The BBC are not frightened of scrapping Doctor Who, despite the revenue it generates.
Doctor Who needs a wake up call and Steven can do it if he puts his mind to it.
Scrap the worse Doctor Who theme ever, bring original exciting stories to the screen. Return Doctor Who to family viewing adventures that made Doctor Who a success in the 60’s and early 70’s.
I thought these were possibly the best eps of the series so far, or at least equal to The Time Of Angels/Flesh & Stone.
Cold Blood was much better than The Hungry Earth but I liked both.
The 2010 Silurian make-up was excellent and their “world” looked very impressive, but I have to agree that much of this story was lifted from 1970’s The Silurians.
But, hey, if you’re gonna pinch ideas you may as well pinch from the best!
fantastic episode! as i have said on the doctor who facebook page, i think the hungry earth/cold blood has been the best two parter since human nature/family of blood. i thoroughly enjoyed it.
as for everyone ‘dissing’ the silurians, they were infact an evolved species, so they weren’t necessarily the same. i thought the makeup and sets were fantastic, and i was gripped all the way through, and the ending was amazing!
wonder what will happen to the tardis? we’ll find out when the pandorica opens
I loved this two parter episode, i think the silurians were amazing and it was so sad when Rory died . It was weird at the end when the doctor had a piece of the tardis which he pulled out from the crack in the wall.
@camm I am curious to know why “an evolved species” would necessarily have human eyes and teeth and speak in perfect english with a human voice? Why would humans be the most evolved? Just because Man can’t imagine there may be something or some one better? The original Silurians were not human, having 3 eyes and a none human vocal pattern. They were more original than these new ones.
I don’t agree with your comparison to human nature/family of blood at all. The best 2 parter of this season has been the Angels 2 parter. This story ranks low with the Evolution of the Daleks story.
Big Bang theory anyone?
- crack/s are formed by doctor and tardis during some point in time… which shatters time and space (and perhaps the universe/s)
- it has something to do with the doctor’s timeline. maybe all that happened…never happened.
- big bang: the start of the universe/s again?
I am sorry to say that crack is realy getting a pain to me you have in some case’s a good story which is going some were even making some sence only to have crow bared in the story the dam crack.
“Hungry Earth” I found last week very slow and not that entertaining for me at all, ”Cold Blood I found much better and the set’s were and if I say this no pun intened here out of this world some great locations as well as the sgi in there as well.
I felt it was let down by the story’s near ending when there was a chance for a good battle we got we will go to sleep for a thousand years.
Amy/Karen is getting alot better than at the start her acting when roy died I through was great well acted she is growing on me. But am I heartless as when I see roy get shot and died did not care a bit as he died, why can we not have a assistant like captian jack with a personality so that amy could have some one to bounce off instead on the plank of wood that is roy.
RORYYYYYY! :’(
why?!
