Rate & Discuss: The Hungry Earth
The most ambitious drilling project in history has reached deeper beneath the Earth’s crust than man has ever gone before - but now the ground itself is fighting back. The Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in a tiny mining village and find themselves plunged into a battle against a deadly danger from a bygone age.
So, there we have it – the end credits roll on another brand new adventure, which means it’s time to set your brains to ‘discuss’ and let us know what you thought of it!
In tonight’s long-awaited episode, penned by Chris Chibnall, we witnessed the return of the cold-blooded creatures known as the Silurians, who first appeared in the series in 1970. It was another blast from the past for the Doctor, but the resurrection of the reptile-like Earth-dwellers meant very bad news for the human race in the wake of history’s most ambitious drilling project, which ended up breaking more than just world records!
After the trials and tribulations faced by Amy and Rory last week, a nice break in Rio was just what the Doctor ordered, but unfortunately the TARDIS had other ideas, and our time travelling trio found themselves in a not-so-exotic mining village in the middle of Wales instead, where, naturally, there was great, great danger afoot. It wasn’t long before our heroes were thrown head first into battle with with an evil from a bygone age, and, this time, even the very ground beneath their feet can’t be trusted…

The story concludes next week in Cold Blood – what are you hopes for its resolution?
I just laughed my head of when Amy said “Did you just shush me.” So funny! A good episode
I agree, very good episode
It really does feel like Classic Doctor Who in a way that the David Tennant years weren’t.
Overall, a really good 1st part, would have liked more Amy tho. And I loved the cliffhanger at the end with the Silurian city. Loving the lack of showiness in the cliffhangers this era.
Very good episode In my opinion Matt gets better after every episode. Would of liked more of Amy even if she does get on my nerves. Good cliffhanger and can’t wait to see what happens next
Almost a sigh of relief feeling now. I’ve said it enough that I was a Tenth Doctor fan and wasn’t sure about this Season, but I have to admit that after what I personally saw as a dodgy start, Doctor Who is starting to right itself in my eyes.
I won’t get into “them and us” between the RTD and Classic Doctor Who fans, because it alienates both. What I will say is if both of us can be happy in at least some sense, then it will only serve to strengthen the Doctor Who fanbase.
I’m still very cautious about Season 5, I’ll only be able to make my judgement when the Season ends, but I said that I was open to having my mind changed about Season 5 and as of tonight’s episode, it’s slowly happening.
As for tonight’s episode, I liked how they explained the differences between the classic and new Silurians by saying they were an off-shoot species, because that’s plausible.
The ground swallowing coffins was quite macabre, but I very much liked the idea and the Silurians performing disection while they’re awake and showing the scar to prove it?………probably the first time I’ve ever found Doctor Who unnerving as other people have stated they have.
I found it interesting both that what looked like two different species in images were actually just masked and unmasked Silurians, and I also like the idea of the Silurians, because Earth actually was their planet before it was ours and they’re about as alien as we are in actual fact.
Very interesting episode and I look forward to the next. My mind is changing, just hope Moffatt and Co keep it up.
P.S: Amy’s winning me over too, and it’s not easy to change my mind usually.
Dreadful. So disappointing. The Silurians of the 70’s were alien, 3 eyed, snouted almost dragonish with alien sounding voices. These are so human it is unbelievable!!! The makeup was well done, I agree but still looked human. I think if they had used the mask version as the real face, it would have added strenght.The episode over all was slow and maintained a slow pace. I think MS works very well without Amy. The Silurian city ending was impressive but still lacked imagination.
Yes, there was a real feel of “classic” series to this.
Matt was brilliant.
As soon as this finished I wanted to watch it again. For me, it’s the best epsiode of Series 5 so far.
Cannot wait for next week.
I feel I should brace myself.
I wasn’t so keen. The pacing was great, the Silurians are absolutely beautiful, Rory is brilliant as always, but…
The Doctor and Ambrose. He was far harsher there than he perhaps should have been and indeed would have been. When he told Ambrose “you’re better than this” he hadn’t given her any reason to assume that what they were fighting was all that intelligent. As far as she was concerned, they were murdering monsters. In my eyes, I think there should have been a quick line there saying that whatever they were facing could be people who were scared, just like her. Or something along those lines.
I’m not sure I ‘get’ Nasreen as a cohesive character, either, though I’m not sure whether that would be the fault of the actress, the writer, or my tendency to overanalyse people. I’m leaning towards the latter.
And being dissected whilst still conscious? Bit Torchwood, Mr Chibnall?
On the other hand, MS’s face when he realised he’d let Elliot go out alone was fantastic. Brilliant acting. Likewise KG getting sucked into the earth. And I look forward to next week.
It was okay, but fealt far too much like forty five minutes of set up as opposed to an episode in its own right. Witness the brilliance of part one of the Angels two parter. There was lots of lovely bits, the three regulars were as great as ever, but nothing pulled it above being merely good. Possibly my least favourite of the current run so far. That sounds quite damning in some respects, I have to say I did enjoy it still, but it didn’t really tickle at me as much as the rest of this run. It’ll be interesting to see where part two takes it, maybe as a whole it’ll really come together and alter my initial opinion.
I was left feeling absolutely nothing by this episode. As others have said, it felt too much like it was there solely to set up the second part. Nothing happened until the Silurians arrived and it started to get good, but the pacing was far far too slow.
There’s an interesting negative reaction to this episode so far, I mean I enjoyed this episode but I think that’s because I’ve decided to try and be more positive about the Season, but to read people really disliked it is interesting.
I can’t see why people are complaining about the pacing. In my honest opinion, this is the only Part One since Doctor Who returned in 2005 to actually use a two-part story the way it should be used.
Using Part One to set up a story is a brilliant idea because at least you understand the characters, their backgrounds in relation to the plot and you won’t have any reason to question the motives of characters or the plot when Part Two airs the next week. To be honest, in the past, Part One (excluding Utopia and The Time of Angels) has usually only featured a small set up with a majority of the episode leading into the cliffhanger.
@JC
My post seems negative, but I didn’t ‘really dislike’ it, it just grabbed me less than the other episodes this series.
@TE
I don’t know that there should be any set rules, and a way part one of a two parter ’should’ be used. Whatever works for that particular story.
@TWWL
Yeah, I think I misspoke there, I really meant it was interesting that some people weren’t too keen on it, while I enjoyed it
I thought it was a good episode, and did a good job of leading up to next week.
I also thought it was really interesting how many references there were to Classic Who. For example the first time, in *Doctor Who and the Silurians* (Doc #3), the Silurians were revived because of the power from a nearby nuclear center. And in *Inferno* (Doc #3) drilling deep into the earth caused humans to become feral, primitive creatures- perhaps similar to what is happening to Tony. In *the Daemons* (also Doc #3), there was a similar shield that prevented anyone from entering or leaving the village.
PS- I’m only pointing these out; I think it’s good that there are more references to Classic Who these days
I liked it, thought the story was good and MS is great. He seems to make evrey story intresting to watch. The only thing that buged me was the new Silurians. They looked nothing like the old ones! The only thing they have in commen is they both have scales. The colour is deffrent, no third eye, i think i bit to human. And i don’t understand why they have those masks. But otherwise i liked it, bit Torchwood in some places.
i really enjoyed it first time that i was not imagining DT in place of MS.Great entertainment for saturday evening as it should be.
Oh dear. I thought it was dull. Really really dull. My feelings for this new series are going further down each week. and (ready for controversy) the cliffhanger was the worst ever. I agree there should be no set rules about a 2 parter but the cliffhanger should at least show some last minute drama and jeprody for the characters. This cliffhanger was just “oh we have a silurian city”…that was it????
Having watched this again, I stand by my original comments on it. Great episode.
It’s dark and eerie, and well paced. Matt just owns the role of The Doctor now. The scene where he interrogated the Silurian was excellent.
I found future Amy and Rory waving from the distance quite strange too. Something seemingly trivial, along with The Doctor crossing his timeline previously, that will have more significant meaning later on?
The only thing I would change about this series is when it is aired. It would definitely suit being broadcast on a Winter’s night.
