The shortlist for the TV Choice Awards 2010 has been revealed, with Doctor Who facing competition from Merlin, Wild at Heart and Waterloo Road for the Best Family Drama gong.

In addition, Karen Gillan’s portrayal of companion Amy Pond in the latest series has secured her a place in the Best Actress category, alongside Waterloo Road’s Denise Welch, Keeley Hawes from Ashes to Ashes, and Kaya Scodelario for her role in Skins.

Matt Smith is up against Jack O’Connell from Skins, Philip Glenister from Ashes to Ashes and John Barrowman (we don’t need to tell you who he is…) for Best Actor, while last year’s mini-series of Torchwood, Children Earth, goes head to head with Shameless, Ashes to Ashes and Skins for the Best Drama Series prize.

Voting is open until July 9th, and the winners will be announced at the ceremony on September 6th, which will be hosted by Alexander ‘Mr Smith’ Armstrong.

We’d just like to wish Doctor Who, Torchwood and all its cast and crew the best of luck!

    I feel really guilty if I don’t vote DW/Torchwood. Is that healthy?

    To have Karen Gillan nominated for best actress is ludicrous. Although she is the primary reason I am watching this season of Doctor Who, she is a terrible actor. She can only stare straight ahead in any scene, so unnatural.

    @Eric C.
    She is in no way terrible; she’s also a darn sight better than some other companions I could mention. *Cough* Freema *Cough*

    Has Freema just become the Meg Griffin of Doctor Who. I always felt she was a good companion but the writers let her down (even RTD) and they gave her nothing to work with

    @pirko
    Agreed. Freema was a brilliant actress, but she’s been so underused in both Doctor Who and Torchwood. She probably would have been in The Sarah Jane Adventures too, if she was actually able to film Enemy of the Bane.

    Cheers TE

    It’s such a shame for Freema I feel. First of all she was brought in JUST after Billie Piper so of course she felt the full force of following on as the next companion. Then the writers give her a stupid “Unrequinted love” story that just was boring and didnt challenge the character (at least Rose had the arc of finding out new things about the dr and donna learnt her own value)…THEN she gets dropped at end of series 3.

    She then took part in a 3 episode stint in Torchwood and Two of those stories were about OWEN, not her! And Im sorry (as much as I loved series 4) She was wasted again and they stuck her in a similar situation to series 3.

    I feel so sorry for her as she never got a proper chance as a companion.

    i think i remember i think it was the Sun (AKA toilet paper) reported Freema was axed which was a load of garbage, but i preferred her to karen gillan, as much as i like her as a person cos shes a really nice person, she has to be worst actress ever to be involved with DW.

    sorry, this is a bit off topic, but, well we r now in the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, and as any smart whovian knows a time lord can only regenerate 12 times so i wanted to hear peoples thoughts on whether Doctor Who should end after this?

    I dont think dr who will end any time soon. Its a very popular programme and makes millions for the bbc (even if they do screw with the times) so I have a feeling when it comes to that 13th regeneration, they will do something to make sure he gets 13 new regenerations…i think they will anyway..

    @13th DOCTOR

    I also read that about freema being axed in the sun (or the comic strip as I call it) but RTD has always stated that the plan was always to have her last one series. Its even backd up in his book so I think he was telling the truth.

    @The 13th Doctor
    Probably one of the most difficult questions there is The 13th Doctor.

    My instinct as a Doctor Who fan is that I want it to continue beyond 12 regenerations, I want them to find a way to give the Doctor more, as other Time Lords have had the opportunity to have and for the Doctor to live quite a while longer.

    However, it shouldn’t go on forever, otherwise far in the future, we’ll have the 40th or 50th Doctor and the series will lose all meaning and be incredibly diluted to the point that the 11 Doctors we remember now are themselves meaningless.

    On yet another hand, you have the prospect of Doctor Who ending and one of the worst things I can think of happening, rebooting the series and going back to the First Doctor and starting all over again, which would just be horrendous.

    It’s a question that even as a Doctor Who fan, I can’t answer

    but think about it, the last ever DW story, that would be sumthin, i mean i dont want it to end but there comes a point when it will have to
    also, i fear the next doctor could be the last, cos if the fake 10th doctor regeneration in the stolen earth/journeys end counts as a regeneration then we only have 1 doctor left…..

    its a very tricky question….

    It could have been a regeneration, the Doctor did say that he used some of the energy to rejuvenate his body and syphoned the rest off into a “matching bio-recepticle”, which would suggest the full regeneration process happened, but who knows.

    It’s my opinion that it’s far too early to be thinking about Doctor Who ending though. It was off the air for quite a considerable time and only came back five years ago, it’s built up a whole new audience and to end it permanently would be a mistake, I think.

    It is a tricky one and one I don’t like thinking about, lol

    well the time may come or it may not…. just wanted to see what people thought

    I read somewhere it was decided that the “12 rule” doesn’t apply anymore because the Time Lords are gone and they were the ones who enforced it. It’s like what #10 said at the end of Waters of Mars: the Doctor can make his own rules because there’s no one else.

    On the other hand, the Doctor loves going on about how old he is, and it’s doubtful he’d want to live indefinitely.

    These are only theories, of course
