Rate & Discuss: The Big Bang

Warning! This article and its comments may contain spoilers...

The Doctor is gone, the TARDIS has been destroyed, and the universe is collapsing. The only hope for all reality lies with a little girl who still believes in the stars.

Just over 3 months ago, the Eleventh Doctor crash-landed in Amelia Pond’s back garden, and ever since that fateful night, they’ve faced non-stop drama and adventure, as they’ve embarked on an epic journey across the stars. Along the way they’ve faced the likes of Smilers, Daleks and Dream Lords galore, but there’s been something else following them, just out of sight… that is, until now!

Tonight’s Big Bang tied up the loose ends that have been developing throughout the previous episodes, and our questions were given their much needed answers, as the cracks that have remained hidden in the shadows were finally explained.

It might have been the final episode, but that didn’t stop Steven Moffat throwing in a last-minute array of the usual shocks, laughs and tears for which he is acclaimed, and it’s safe to say that the showrunner’s first finale was unlike anything we’ve seen before, pushing the boundaries of new Who – and the concept of timey-wimey - itself.

Whether you’ve loved or loathed Matt Smith and Karen Gillan’s portrayals of the Doctor and Amy, it’s now time, as their first tenure in the TARDIS draws to its close, to look back over tonight’s finale and the 12 episodes before it. Whovians know well enough by now that all goods things must come to an end, and, even though we’re saying a fond farewell to our beloved Time Lord for a few months, it means we can set our brains to nostelgia and relive the highs and lows of the Eleventh Doctor’s first series…

The TARDIS closes its doors on another action-packed voyage, so please leave your thoughts on tonight’s finale and the series as a whole below. You can also give the episode a star rating out of 5, and don’t forget to leave your mark in the poll.

    @pirko

    regarding why amy didn’t remember the events of journey’s end, it was because that event got swallowed by the crack remember in flesh and stone? the whole ‘time can be rewritten thing’ :)

    @JC

    you are of course entitled to your own opinion that’s what this site is for :) i myself loved the finale, and thought the wedding was amazingly done, i think the whole big bang thing will be resolved at christmas (or atleast i hope) because i don’t think i could wait any longer :L
    LOVED the time jumping part, very clever.
    and LOVED the big ’something old, something new….’ bit :)

    OMG! Is were I start that finale was amazing had me on the edge of my seat right from the point that Amy woke up in the PaNdorica and was like WHAT :O. It was full of twists, tuRns, time hopping, Stone Daleks. Of course the Mysterious River Song who we have to wait A WHOLE OTHER YEAR to discover who she really is and then everything changes eeeeepppp. Rory was back as well of course and he waited 2,000 years to be reunited with his love which was so adorable I think. Then the DoctOr getting shoot by the Dalek :O I cried loads I knew he’d live by some meens, but I still cried. Then the Wedding of course that was really GREAT and THAT DANCING I was doing it around the house afterwards and my mum was looking at me like ‘what the hell are you doing?’- I’ll have to do it in the clubs next weekend see if it catches on lol. Then of course the nice ending when they all go off into the Tardis of on a trip to the Orient Express to seen the Queen :D (But which Orient Expres and which Queen?) we have six months to wait :)

    Not all the questions have yet to be answered. The silence is still on the way and River Song is still a mystery. But until then speculation will ruin supreme, HUGE LOVE TO Matt, Karen, Steven,Beth, Peirs and the whole Doccy Who team thanks for a great series 5 after the loss of the great DT I was a little worried, but MS and the writting has certinally kept my love and hunger for Doccy Who still alive in me.

    THANK YOU.

    Appreciate the comments guys, you just never know how some people might take a well-intentioned opinion.

    Although I found the episode to be disappointing in some ways and not really a Series Finale as I know them, it did have some cool features and bits I enjoyed, I found the Doctor finding a Fez and saying “Fezs are cool”, before Amy and River take it off him and shoot it, that was funny, I did like that and it reminded me of Matt Smith’s comments about wanting the Doctor to maybe wear a hat.

    So it wasn’t all bad, just disappointing in terms of what it didn’t answer for me, I appreciate people have accepted my opinion. ;)

    My thoughts are identical to JC. However i feel totally at ease now i have seen confidential, and as has been said on here, it was confirmed that series 6 focuses on the unanswered questions. The content of the story was fine, although i was not impressed that it was essentially 55 mins of running around. All i can say is that it better be omega next year. Moffat had an entire extra year to work on series 5 and beyond-he simply must deliver.

    Absolutely awful. Terrible episode, terrible series. Probably the last time I watch it until a decent writer takes over the series again. Come back RTD!

    @ Steve

    Do my eyes deceive me?? i never thought id ever read u wanting RTD to come back!! :O I did say moffat wasnt all that he was cracked up to be

    I will admit though that this episode wasnt as exciting or as full on past finales. I think moffats brilliance is thinking outside the box and brilliant mind numbing stories BUT i dont think hes much of an action writer and his work (and ive always said) can get too complicated

    This is the best Doctor Who has been! Brilliant finale! I cannot believe it’s over, but I cannot wait for Christmas and the next series. Love.

    Agreed on the complication thing Pirko. Perhaps he thinks quite deeply about things and things twist and turn in his mind, forming into weird and wonderful combinations of events but then you have to try and take the viewer into that through what’s on screen.

    i think this episode was quiet good, maybe alot of questions went unanswered but my problem was with the time jumping.
    as i recall the doctor cant go backward on his own time line but here he does it all the time.
    until now the series was linear in its idea and consept of time travel but in this episode it was… i dont know how to say it, problematic maybe.
    if anyone has any ideas about it. i had like to know.

    I thought it was brilliant. With time collapsing, the laws of time go out the window. Every time I watch it, it gets better…like most of the stories this year.

    @Steve

    Fair enough that u dont like it…but HATEING it!?

    Anyway…best episode ever in my opinian, no more lame “lets pull the earth back home” stuff,
    Great ending and great effects,
    And i love the idea of having the plot go for another year :)
    Also do u guys reckon that river is going 2 actully be a companion, like oviously she is, but do u reckon we will see her as part of a series? i hope we do :)
    Also slightly disapointed my theory about the 3rd level on amys house wasnt there :(
    also do u think that the shadow in the eleventh hour was the doc running past in this episode?

    LOVED IT.
    Ok, so my questions:
    1) If the universe was reborn, does that mean that everything happened as it did in the “old” universe, or will history be different? Like would the Time Lords still exist and will Rose be living in London? What about Torchwood? And the Master?
    2) When Amy brought back the Doctor, was his timeline restored too? Have all the aliens he ever killed before “Big Bang 2″ come back?
    3) If the universe was reborn, does Gallifrey still exist?
    4) Who is River Song?!?!
    5) LOVED this episode! My favorite part was at the wedding reception. I actually got chills when Rory gave Amy the book and I realized what “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” was. THAT was probably the greatest part of all 5 “new Who” series so far.

    asfgqhlanafasjgk. That is all.

    Okay speculation on River, it would be seriously weird and hard to figure out how it happened but I feel like there is a Torchwood link there, maybe a red herring but I got that distinct vibe! Vortex Manipulator? “Everything Changes!” That was a major theme of Torchwood!! Can’t wait to find out!!

    Speaking of answers… When the doctor laid his hands on Amelia’s in the forest after he supposedly walked off…I’d always wondered how he did it! And then when he said for her to “remember what he told her when she was seven” I wondered what the heck that meant! So at least two little questions were answered…..

    I honestly hope that Rory becomes a full-time companion now, especially after marrying Amy. It would give the series a whole new dynamic, the first married couple in the TARDIS and all. Perhaps they’ll make an announcement about that soon.

    Anyway, that finale was pretty good. Loved the whole thing with Rory guarding the Pandorica for 2000 years. Loved the happy-happy ending. Loved that Amy didn’t die and survived with Rory to continue travelling with the Doctor.

    My god! That was the best final i have ever seen! During the RTD era i would dream and pray for stories like this. Character based, sad, funny, chilling. I love the new Doctor! He just feels so humble, and when he walked into the crack in Amy’s bedroom… God that was good acting. Can’t wait for christams and the next series.
    YAAAAAAY!

    @pirko
    i agree with you, i think moffats writing is too complicated especially for the children. i feel the audience should have been a lot older for series 5 – too many sexy outfits, kissing and smooching and coming on too the doctor. RTD was a lot more subtle.
    the series as a whole had a lot of filler episodes like the Lodger and Van Gogh with not much action and poor story lines. unless the lodger episode is one big hint for series 6 , with an invisible floor in amys house and a tardis being built.

    personally, i was hugely dissapointed withv last nights episode. it was quite ordinary. lets hope the next series will be more exciting.
