First two Series 6 episodes to be set/filmed in the US
The BBC has today confirmed that the first two episodes of Series 6 are to be set and filmed in the US!
The two-part opener, set in the 1960s, is written by showrunner Steven Moffat, and the adventure is being co-produced by BBC America, who made the inital announcement on their official Twitter earlier this afternoon. Filming will take place next month in the Utah desert, with the episodes also welcoming back Alex Kingston as the enigmatic River Song.
The story will see the Doctor, Amy and Rory ”on a secret summons” to the Oval Office.
“The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually,” said Steven. “Of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before. But not for real, not on location – and not with a story like this one. Oh, you wait!”
Executive producer, Piers Wenger, added: “Steven’s scripts generally inspire us to go that extra mile – this time we’re going that extra four thousand. Thanks to our friends at BBC America and to the continuing ambition of our lead writer and production team, the first two episodes of Matt Smith’s second season as the Doctor are going global and look set to become Doctor Who’s most action-packed and ambitious season opener yet.”
In addition, BBC America have marked the news by releasing a specially-made teaser:
Last month it was revealed that the first 2 episodes are to be directed by Toby Haynes.
As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts about the latest developments below!
cool, does this mean episodes 1 and 2 are a two parter?
Opening with a two part Moffat story?! Fantastic!
opening with a two parter, about time. Set abroad, sounds good. Being filmed abroad … Being co-produced by bbc america, crap.
OMG…sounds good!!
I echo everyone else and add more: a Moffat two-parter with River Song? Fantastic.
As for filming in America, well, why not? If you’ve got the budget to go to these places, why not use it? And being co-produced by BBC America, well it’s all part of the BBC, isn’t it? And Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger and Beth Willis will still be the execs, won’t they? Will they?
The Utah desert? I’ve always thought Arches National Park or it’s neighbor, Canyonlands National Park would be great places for aliens to base themselves. The landscape there is pretty “alien world” as it is! Now the question is, which President is the one doing the summoning? Kennedy, Johnson or Tricky Dick Nixon? If it’s Nixon, he himself could have been part of a planned alien invasion!
How about coming down to Australia??
