Russell T Davies has revealed that Torchwood: Miracle Day will include less Doctor Who references, but will still “honour and respect” the spin off’s previous three series.

“Captain Jack is immortal, and what we are talking about is the world turns immortal,” he explained at the TCA press tour. “There’s an awful lot of story packed into that… There’s no break in continuity. There’s no fracturing. There’s fewer references to Doctor Who, because we are making a show out here, they are making a show in Britain.”

He continued: ”It’s quite difficult to coordinate any sort of crossover. Neither would you want to, because both shows have a fantastic identity of their own. But for those fans who like that sort of stuff, it’s still absolutely faithful.”

Filming for Series 4 began in LA yesterday, and you can see the very latest news here.

Ironically I’ve been wondering about this very issue, because the synopsis of Miracle Day sounds like it could seriously clash with Doctor Who. Nobody dies? A population boom (and those don’t take place overnight) that strains world resources? I would think Martha or Sarah Jane would notice and try calling the Doctor at some point.

Yeah, I felt that way all through the Children of Earth. In the finale of DW Season 4, Torchwood called the Doctor to help with the Daleks, but aliens show up demanding children and they don’t even try to phone him?

I’m a bit disappointed to hear him say that a crossover doesn’t look likely, because I always thought it would be cool to have the Doctor on, just for an episode, and have the Torchwood team finally get to meet him. They’ve had the Doctor on Sarah Jane’s show a couple times already. It didn’t look like it was too hard for them to coordinate a crossover.

@Addriene That’s the problem. They try to keep each show as separate as possible, pretty much ignoring that they take place in thew same universe where other characters exist who would more than likely try contacting the Doctor in a crisis.

I think its also a matter of tone. Doctor Who and SJA are closer in tone to each other than Doctor Who and Torchwood are. It would be interesting to have a proper crossover, but I feel the Doctor would be a bit too out of place on Torchwood.
