Rate & Discuss: The Curse of the Black Spot
The TARDIS is marooned onboard a 17th-century pirate ship whose crew is being attacked by a mysterious and beautiful sea creature, and the Doctor must gain the trust of the implacable Captain Avery. He must work quickly, for his friends have already fallen under the Siren’s spell…
Avast me Whovian mateys, and what do we ‘ave ‘ere!? Well, a discussion for tonight’s new episode of Doctor Who, The Curse of the Black Spot, of course! It was a case of all hands on deck in the rip-roaring adventure, as the TARDIS trio took to the high seas…
As with all good pirate stories, this episode boasted an array of sword fighting, rope swinging and plank walking. Of course, it wouldn’t be a good pirate story without a strange disturbance becalming the waters, and in this case, it was the mysterious Siren, using her enchanting beauty to mystify the ship’s crew… Well, if you’ve got it, flaunt it!
It takes a lot to make a buccaneer quiver in his boots, but with them all living in fear of the dreaded black spot, it was time to batten down the hatches, discard the bottles of rum and hoist the mizzen, as the Doctor, Amy and Rory set out to solve the mystery of the “stroppy, homicidal mermaid”. That is, if they didn’t fall under her spell themselves…
So, did the episode deliver the booty? Is a pirate’s life for you? Did it make you a Jolly Roger, or should everyone involved be made to walk the plank to be fed to the fish? Did it push the boat out? Leave YOUR mark in the comments, whether it left you feeling sea sick, chanting “Yo ho ho!”, or using your remote control as a makeshift sword! Ahoy!
@Patrick
thanks thats interesting to no i didnt no she was comeing back appart from a few scenes here and there
I do think we’ve got a theme of two universes running here – good call @Lisa-Marie. That could be an interesting idea about Amy’s “Schroedinger” pregnancy.
As for the episode itself, I liked it. It was a simple romp, possibly too big a contrast after the hugely involved American two-parter, but the sort of episode that would have been typical in 2005/6/7 as a standalone adventure. Loved the twist with the Siren – good aliens are the best kind. Plus, as Mr Bonneville said in DWM – staring at Lily Cole for a few hours, not the hardest job in the world.
Steal of the episode goes to Amy the pirate.
Annoyance of the episode: CPR. Why does no one get the ratio right on TV? It’s 30 compressions to 2 breaths! Rory is a nurse – he would know this! I know that 30 compressions takes a while, and the breaths are far more visually interesting, but still! At least do 15:2, which was the recommended ratio for a good few years.
But never mind that. Brilliant pirate story, and the kids at pre-school on Monday will be ecstatic about it.
I suspect that, at the end, the Doctor may have deduced that he has the wrong Amy (not necessarily a bad Amy, just an Amy who is meant to be up the duff, but isn’t).
I had doubts about this episode as soon as I heard it was written by Steve Thompson (the person who wrote the bad episode from Series One of Sherlock). Can’t say I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t too bad.
I really want a spin-off about Captain Avery and the crew adventuring through space. That would be awesome.
It was good. For the normal, non-Whovian crowd (we Whovians do get a bit caught up in the timey-wimey stuff) it’s nice to have a more down-to-Earth episode, if you will. I agree that Moffat is trying to strike a balance with the audience, which is a good idea.
To be honest the “Next Time” trailer got me more excited than this episode did. Another Time Lord?! And the Ood?! Weeee! :]
An Ok romp, but strangely so far removed from the previous two episodes dark, highly intriguing, convoluted storyline. i was disappointed but it was one for the children at least. I look forward far more to next weeks episode.
I loved Hugh Bonneville. I have seen it twice now and appreciate it a little more after a second sitting. It wasn’t the best episode ever, but it was just what we needed after the deluge of information from the past two weeks. It had the feel of a classic series episode in many ways. I also like the two universes idea quite a lot. Keep up the good work!
I enjoyed this episode sooo much more than the first two, it had a good story, good cast and was simple and easy to watch! This is what I hope we see more of instead of loaadss of complicated timey-wimey stuff xDD Cant wait for next week either: Ood! <3
I liked it however I have one request to all the writers:
STOP TRYING TO KILL RORY!
Ya know mabey killing rory is for the best cause i think that the doctor and amy had that girl together ya know the one who regenerated
@Joe
It is becoming a bit of a trope, isn’t it? That’s the third time they’ve killed him now. Well, okay, so he wasn’t really dead, but he’d stopped breathing. Which means River’s died once, the Doctor’s died twice (regnerations don’t count), Amy’s died once and Rory’s died three times. I think if we’re going to kill anyone and then bring them back to life, it should really be River. That would be much more interesting, just to see the Doctor’s reaction.
@TSG
Don’t forget he was shot by Canton in DOTM yes I know it was a fake death but it still it looked he died!
Very late again, different priorities at the moment. As before, I haven’t read other peoples comments, mainly so I don’t forget what I want to say.
Firstly, it was an ok episode. It had to follow the two-parter that ended in a girl regenerating, so it was a tough act to follow to say the least.
I liked that the black spot was a skin sample, rather than a mark of death and that the Siren was a computerised doctor, sort of. I thought the way she dealt with people who interfered was a bit excessive and violent, but there we are.
The episode had reasonably strong links to “The Girl In The Fireplace”, I thought. Like that episode, there were windows or gateways between a place in Earth’s history and a spacecraft and also like that episode, you had something non-human trying to fix something. In terms of “The Girl In The Fireplace”, it was clockwork robots trying to repair their ship, in the case of this episode, it was a artificial Doctor trying to keep humans alive.
These similarities weren’t unwelcome however, as the story was different enough to feel like a completely new story, despite some similarities.
The eye patch woman, personally and at the moment, is an irritation and not the best arc, despite whoever she may be possibly being really significant. I just don’t like the whole popping up out of no where and saying things that at the moment mean nothing, though clearly it centers around Amy.
There was a very slight sexual reference at the end, with Rory telling Amy she should dress up as a pirate more often, but unlike in Season 5, it was much more moderate and I was cool with that, it didn’t bother me.
I did find the Siren taking the Tardis quite interesting. I mean, it could just be as simple as the Tardis’ behaviour seeming really wrong to the Siren, and so she took it, but I have to wonder whether she took it because as a biological organism, there’s something wrong with it. The Doctor said the Siren took people who were sick, injured or dying, so perhaps there’s something biologically wrong with the Tardis and she was trying to help it. Having said that, it wasn’t hooked up to the spacecraft in any way and the Doctor, Amy and Rory were able to leave, so maybe it isn’t ill or perhaps the Tardis was so alien, the Siren couldn’t “interface” with it.
So yeah, it had a touch act to follow and that, for me, affected what I thought of this episode and The Doctor’s Wife next week may sandwich it in between three great episodes, but having said that, it was a perfectly good Doctor Who episode in its own right, I don’t really have any criticisms.
Obviously, I meant “tough act to follow”, sorry for the double post
pretty good episode tbh! it was a good bridge between the timey wimey stuff last times and to come! but i do love all that anyway AHHHH AMY AS A PIRATE!!!! LOVED IT!?!?!?!? she was soo funny on confidential when doing the sword fighting :L awww i do feel sorry for rory/arthur for always being killed or nearly killed! blessss ‘im :’) can’t wait for next week! suranne jones will be amazingly creepy i bet! love her, and she’s all ready worked with another doctor (david tennant)!!! that eye patch lady; i agree could be amy’s midwife or, just by the way she’s talking to someone and not directly to amy, any other nurse people!? loved the bit where they went in the ’sick bed’ bit- captain: toby!!! amy: rory!!! doctor: BABBYYYYY!!!! (tardis) :L made me laugh soo much, bless him!anyway does anyone know why the tardis was there anyway? because she only takes things that are like dead or injured so maybe the doctors ‘baby’ is injured!? hmmm… we’ll have to see, i am going to watch it again when i have time and i will keep you posted
@Gilly3
i agree i think it is their daughter , but THIS TELLS YOU WHO SHE IS! :O

@blakey
I dont get how the little girl regenerating could be that person :L Its getting so complicated! xDD
The two things I dont get about the episode are:
- how come The Doctor, Amy and Hugh Bonnerville could get caught by the siren but then revive themseleves and explore when the rest of the crew is hooked up?
- The Doctor smashed the mirror but the last time I checked, smashed bits of mirror can still show reflections O.o
Good episode but not absolutely amazing
OK sort of episode… for me… as much as the Pirates were there for the kids… I couldn’t help picking up a Star Trek vibe… may have something to do with Green women… and a “holographic” Doctor in the sickbay… where the beds were “slabs”… but hey ho… think that thematically the “two ships in one place” is VIP. Amy’s pregnancy… positive/negative “two amy’s in one place”? (And I keep being reminded of details from The Eleventh hour… “how can a duck pond be a duck pond without any ducks…”)Remember The Hungry Earth and the two Amy’s in that?… Comic Relief… Space/Time… Tardis in a Tardis… and two ponds… oh and what do you get when you have two ponds? A river… possibly? Oh and if the Siren focused on those that were sick, injured etc… why no interest in a positive/negative pregnant Amy? Oh and… with the Next Time trailer… why does it look like the TARDIS goes through a crack like the one last season? All could be relevant… or nonsense… depends which universe you’re looking in from… mmmm Alice in Wonderland…. the Doctor as Mad hatter? River as the queen of Hearts… Maybe I should go ang lie down…
