Vote: The Daleks are off for a rest! Are you glad?
This week’s issue of Radio Times includes a new interview with Steven Moffat, in which he reveals that the Daleks “aren’t going to make an appearance for a while”.
The news has led to a lot of discussion among fans, mostly because – as Steven notes – they are “the most famous of the Doctor’s adversaries”, so is it right that they should have a break from the series? The showrunner now feels that they have become too “reliably defeatable” as a result of being overthrown by the Doctor on countless occasions.
Do you agree? Would the series benefit from some Dalek downtime, or does it depend on their exterminating ways? Let us know by voting in the poll and have your say below!

Dalek’s have been a little to over used in resent years. We need a brake.
If The Master can have a break, so can the Daleks.
This is the one thing I actually agree with Moffat about. I do like the Daleks but they were used a lot during the RTD era. The ideas became too tired, especially the new york one, and I feel it kinda ruined their return at the end of series 4
I was very surprised they were in five consecutive series, but I do feel that series 5 was definitely the time to rest them, more so than now.
Yeah, about time. Maybe this would lead up to a big epic finale which the Daleks return maybe in like Series 8 or 9, which leads to the Doctor’s regeneration into his twelfth incarnation. You never know, could be why they’re giving them a rest, but I like the idea of that.
i dont.i love the dalek’s being on the show.
I think they do need to take a Season or two off maybe. If they were still the RTD design Daleks, maybe I wouldn’t say that but I really don’t like the SM Daleks. My hope is that when they come back, Moffat will keep to his word and bring back the old style Daleks with the new style Daleks.
Give them enough time, clear the Dalek palette, bring them back with a bang and actually make them a properly serious threat.
So yeah, as long as Nick Briggs is kept busy in the mean time (voicing the Cybermen this week, for instance), it’s no bad thing that the Daleks are taking a break, rebuilding their empire somewhere, getting quietly stronger in the shadows.
Of course they need a break. I imagne they’ll be back next series though.
Seeing them before a series 7 finale would be too soon and when they do come back its got to be epic.
I love the new Daleks, though I know a lot didn’t. Agreed that they should be given a rest, but not for too long; maybe in series 7 would be good, but I wouldn’t complain if Moffat was fibbing and they appear in the S6 finale…
Meanwhile, bring on my faves, The Cybermen!
im glad, i think the daleks weren’t at all scary any more because they have been defeated so many times. They should be back for the anniversary though
It’s nice that they get a break. They’ve been used far too much the last couple of series. I hope they’ll return with a major threat later on. and I hope Moffat will lay off the toy Daleks and give them some real credit of scare [the new designs]
I do indeed enjoy the Daleks being on the show, but I certainly agree that they need a break, I actually think they should return in 2013 for the 50th Anniversary. I would like it if the Doctor had to regenerate because of a Dalek. It would be a good idea if we actually got to see what happened in the Time War and how the 8th Doctor changed, I would certainly like to see a few of the Classics return like Peter Davidson did in Time Crash. Tom Baker would be an absolute pleasure to see again, obviously not the first three Doctor’s because they sadly died, but to see the Time War would be brilliant. I hope that the Daleks have the most brilliant storyline ever since Victory of the Daleks, for when they return, They’ve got to return for the 50th Anniversary because it’s the Daleks what brought Doctor Who to it’s Stardom today.
The thing about the Daleks is that they are only 4 weeks younger than the Doctor in screen time. They are also very unique. There are hardly any other long live characters who don’t look like men in costume! In fact, Sci Fi overall appears to be limited by the human form. I love the Daleks, The possibilities are endless and SM is wrong. The Doctor does not always win. In fact, the last Dalek appearance proves this and so does the Manhattan 2 parter. Even as far back as Genesis Of the Daleks (1974) proves that the Doctor does not always win. Amazingly people are complaining they have been over used in recent years. Between 1963 and 1967, the Daleks appeared every year and in those days Dalek episode ran up to 12 weeks, (Or 6 weeks in the current format). Give the Daleks a break for a year certainly but they need to have screen presence without being on screen.
Personally, I think the problem with the Daleks was that they have to keep getting bigger. In ‘Dalek’ we were shown exactly how lethal a single Dalek can be, and I was terrified. But by the time we got to 4.12/4.13, there were countless millions, threatening to destroy reality itself, and I was beginning not to care.
A break, I think, will do them the world of good. Let’s gently forget some of their showier appearances and take them back to what they should be.
@Steve
‘Amazingly’??? Just because they were overused in the sixties, doesn’t mean they’re not being overused now. Familiarity breeds tedium, the Daleks should not come back every year just because it’s expected, as in the first five years, but because there’s a great story to tell.
And as for calling Moffat wrong on the Doc always defeating them, you’re really just splitting hairs. Even in Victory, he stopped them doing a lot of damage, he was just tricked into bringing them back as a force.
@PRB I totally agree! I love the new daleks. However i do think they need a break.
@TWWL With regards to your “splitting hair”s remark, the Daleks were not defeated in Victory, he might have stopped them destroying the Earth/London, one thing that previous Doctors have said even the Daleks realise they can not do, but also the Daleks have evolved into a potentially more powerful enemy as these new ones appear to realise the value of having allies! I do not think the Daleks have been overused either in the 60’s or with the recent series. Th problem has been that the stories given to them have been dreadful. The Manhattan 2 parter should gave been binned before it was even passed! As I said, give the Daleks a break for a year certainly but they need to have screen presence without being on screen. Whatever happened during the Time War, if this is the Doctor (and there have been incidences where I begin to wonder), he would not be able to forget the devastation that caused 2 civilizations to die and one to be reborn!
Surely the whole point is not that The Doctor always defeats the Daleks – I don’t know if Moffat’s noticed, but The Doctor always defeats EVERYONE which, if anything, makes The Doctor the less credible character! – rather that ONLY The Doctor can defeat them. To everybody else in the universe, the Daleks ARE unstoppable – Just ask the Cybermen!
Hey, I think the Daleks should have a rest in series 6, return for 1 episode in series 7 and then a big 3 part finale in series 8 or 9 leading to the regeneration of the doctor. I do get a bit bored of doctor who without the daleks though. I think they should of had a break from the daleks in series 5 aswell.
