Your Thoughts: Just who IS the Eyepatch Lady!?
Last night’s episode, The Curse of the Black Spot, saw the return of the mysterious Eyepatch Lady, as played by Frances Barber, who was first seen in Day of the Moon.
Although she has to date only appeared on our screens for a matter of seconds, she’s already created quite a stir, so we thought we’d open up a discussion for you to share your own theories about who she might be. Her appearances so far have been centered around Amy, but is she a friend or a foe? Got any ideas? Share ‘em in the comments!
What we DO know is that she’ll be back in Episode 7 (Frances Barber’s CV lists her character as ‘Kovarian’), but will she be pop up again before then? Only time will tell…
@Mary
thats the first time ive heard that the little girl is lucy saxon is that the same lucy saxon that was with the master r a different girl with the same name?
When the doctor left Amy the 1st time in her garden when she was really young, Amy had to see a few doctors to determine her sanity. Maybe, just maybe 1 of these doctors informed the right people and they ran some tests on amy-(the eyepatch lady is a memory of the tests)-and her house. Knowing that the doc would come back 4 her because he loves playing with earth girls, the eyepatch lady waited. when he eventually did come back their and i say their because there are so many different factors like the cracks, the tardis being taken over and hallucinations being experienced that more than 1 extra-terrestrial being is trying 2 defeat the doctor. The guy who made them sleep from series 5 and think they were dying is not 2 be over looked either, he seemed extremely confident that its not over between them.
Midwife is an interesting idea; my first thought was the boss of some sort of undercover operation talking to her deep-cover operative — possibly telepathically, possibly through a recording hidden deep in Amy’s brain; possibly the operative is Amy, unwittingly, or perhaps it’s something lurking in Amy’s mind. (The sort of thing Psi Corps was occasionally doing on Babylon 5.)
I really really want to find out who she is.
@RickyZ
i agree with you, all though the mid wife theory does seem the best option, i don’t think she looks like a mid wife, her dress or just the way she looks like she is; personality. i think she is probably on of the phyciatric people who looked over amy, ie doing tests on her and amy had forgotton but now has remembered due to something jogging her memory… also with the dream lord, did anyone else notice the doctor say to him ‘there is only one person in the universe who hates me more than you do’… and they looked at eachother as though they both understood. now that means there is someone out there that hates the doctor more than he does himself… i think that person will be someone we will find out soon…
On IMDB the actor is listed as 3 names the first being eye patch lady, the second being Kovarian and the third being Lady Kovarian. she is listen down as these names in the later episodes in the series A good man goes to war and episode 8 this puts me of the idea that she is the Midwife becuase why would a “lady” be a midwife.
i still dont think shes a midwife shes to sinster and weired and moffatt wouldnt make the guessing that obviuse and easy if its a new mystery eliment hes bringing into the show
She actually appeared in “Victory of the Daleks”. She didn’t have an Eye patch though. Someone posted a screen shot and she is standing next to Churchill, but with out an eye patch. At least it appears to be her. It is near the end of the episode.
@Nathan
No, it’s not her. I’ve heard about that theory and seen the screencap. Don’t see the resembalance myself, but it’s Susannah Fielding in Victory of the Daleks, not Frances Barber.
@RickyZ
I think you’ve got it! Something to do with those psychiatrists, at least – hasn’t Karen said that we see the effects of Amy’s damaged childhood this series?
@elena
He said “there’s only one person in the universe who hates me AS MUCH AS you do”, though that would have been a nice thought.
i just cant wait to find out who she is dose n e one no if she will be in every eipisode like the crack in space and time was in the last series as a continuse story arch?
@Peter
You may be right. I wasn’t sure myself actually. I thought maybe she just looked similar. And I was wondering why she didn’t have an eye patch.
@Peter
Read comment 11. I’m new and didn’t properly respond.
She rather looks like Aunt Sharon actually from The Big Bang episode….what does everybody else think?
Sorry for my 2nd comment but the eye patch lady also looks like the lady from The Eleventh Hour episode the woman towards at the end of the episode once prisoner zero was captured and the woman had the 2 girls at either side of her…….
@Patrick
it wasnt the woman prisoner zero possesd it is a totaly different woman if u look closely
Ok this is my theory, I don’t know all the ins and outs of Doctor Who so hopefully this is plausible. I can’t work out whether Eyepatch is human or more sinister. I too saw the Karen interview where she mentioned how we will see the more vulnerable side to Amy as well as how she is quite a broken person.
Could it be possible that Amy is a further crack in time or at least living out two simultaneous realities. If Eyepatch is human then, as postulated, could she be a psychiatrist and Amy is in a secure unit, driven mad by memories of the doctor. In this reality she isn’t pregnant. Then, of course, the other reality is the one we see presented to us on the show, where she is in the Tardis with Rory and pregnant.
If she exists in two realities at the same time it would make sense that the tardis is confused in regards to her pregnant state. Also by existing on both sides of the crack it would support why the silence were so keen to examine her. Why when we have seen how little disregard they have for human life and the control they have over humans, examine Amy shouldn’t she be like any other?
Also I think it’s worth noting how Amy hasn’t mentioned Eyepatch to the Doctor, perhaps Eyepatch is someone recognisable to Amy considering she has had difficulties with her mental health in the past. Amy neglects to tell the doctor out of a residual fear that she might be deemed crazy. After all she’s had to contend with this notion of her for most of her life and has only just been vindicated.
Finally, if there are two realities then obviously one must be, for want of a better term, closed. To my mind, a bit out there I know, this is how we safe the doctor. Amy will choose the Eyepatch reality because in that reality the Doctor’s fate isn’t sealed.
Just a theory. If Eyepatch isn’t human I have no idea. Perhaps we are in more Schrodinger territory, and she is waiting to see what reality plays out just like the rest of us, pregnant or not.
NB, as for the dreaming comment, if amy was in a unit reliving that memory she could of being having a panic attack or walking around or playing it out in some manner. If the alarm was raised Eyepatch could have been called to make sure she was doing ok. She seemed far more supportive when Amy had been peacefully sleeping.
Sorry for the MASSIVE essay!!!
i same the same view as simone that she is another mental projection of a Time lord much like when in The End of Time Pt. 1 & 2 when “the woman” was sending mental projections to Wilfred Mott in the form of a the woman in a white dress because the only person to date to have seen the eye patch woman is amy pond much like how only Wilfred Mott saw the time lord woman, and given the regenerating girl from the space suit it could fit
and speaking of the girl, her being Lucy Saxon is more than a little crazy…it’d be more plausible she’s River Song making the doctor a father (again)
Me and my friend think she is a dream lord. The dream lord we know is meant to be an evil version of the doctor, like the vailyard. We thought that this woman could be a similar thing to Amy.
This would also link in with the girl, who could be amy’s daughter. Amy is pregnant in Amy’s Choice. Coincidence? I think not. :3
@Calu
thats an interesting thory id never thought of that one before its very plussable that it could be rite
@Paige i think your ideas are pretty awesome!! The two realities thing makes sense with the whole pregnant/not pregnant situation…as for Mrs Eyepatchy, i thought maybe midwife but i agree with some of the other comments that it’s maybe too obvious, bearing in mind that Steven Moffat has a bonkers imagination!! I also reckon that there definitely could be link between the episode Amy’s Choice as she was pregnant there too. Maybe the psychic pollen is at work again…
