It has been confirmed today that fourteen new episodes of Doctor Who have been commissioned starring Matt Smith as the Doctor!

The announcement was initially made by Sam Hodges, Head of Communications for BBC Fiction, on Twitter, and was later retweeted by showrunner Steven Moffat, who added: “14 eps + Matt DEFINITELY. I’ve got a plan and I’m NOT TELLING YOU WHAT IT IS. Now hush or River shoots you with her Spoiler Gun”. Consider us warned!

A spokesperson has commented: “The new commission is a big commitment, not many other shows have such a commitment so far in advance. We do not know yet how many will air in 2012.”

As Doctor Who Magazine have reaffirmed, the ‘14 episodes’ is made up of this year’s Christmas special, plus a following 13 episodes, presumably making up Series 7. It hasn’t been confirmed how the 13 episodes will be aired (i.e., back to the original 13 week run or another halfway split, etc…). What would you like to see? Let us know!

I think it is great news if Doctor Who is back for 14 new episodes (Xmas one is included in that I should think). Great that Matt is staying on. It would be a shame to lose Karen and Arthur as they have been great characters (although Rory has been a bit of a spare part this series) but the series has to move on at some point and create a new dynamic of characters.

I also think that SM needs to start afresh with a brand new set of stories and story arch. Its good he has kept certain themes running through series 5 & 6 but he can’t keep running those stories for future series. I am finding it hard to enjoy this series because it’s becoming repetitive so if Moffat is wise he’ll wrap up any loose ends to these last two series, even if it means losing amy and rory (on a side note; I can understand if amy and rory will leave as amy will have the baby and I doubt she’ll want to risk her childs safety every week). Back to the new stories front…

So many people slate the RTD era but each season was new and fresh and a new dynamic ran through. There needs to be an element of fun coming back to the show and less complicated storylines.

my favourite companions of all 11 doctors:

    1st doctor: steven taylor
    2nd doctor: jamie mcCrimmon/zoe heriot
    3rd doctor: jo grant
    4th doctor: adric
    5th doctor: tegan jovanka/adric
    6th doctor: peri brown
    7th doctor: ace
    8th doctor: chang lee
    9t doctor: adam mitchell
    10th doctor: donna noble
    11th doctor: river song
(series 7 will be ruined with amy pond, rory williams and river song i personally think not enough mystery left since a good man goes to war as it makes no sese how does it fit into the doctor life)…
