Ratings, reviews and reactions to Let’s Kill Hitler
After a long summer of waiting, our beloved Doctor graced our screens at last last night in Let’s Kill Hitler, so let’s see how he got on, shall we?
According to the overnight ratings, 6.2million people tuned in for his return on BBC One/BBC One HD, which is a 28.7% of the television share. Although it was BBC One’s highest rated show of the day, unsurprisingly the night was won by The X Factor on ITV1, with 10.6million viewers. The final BARB ratings will be released soon.
The autumn premiere has also been recieved well by the critics! It was “…giddily thrilling entertainment” says the Telegraph, while the Guardian have described the episode as an “energetic, timey-wimey tour de force”. The Independent have praised actress Nina Toussaint-White for her “sassy and vivacious” portrayal of Mels, and SFX predicts: “This has to rank among the cleverest Who episodes Moffat has ever written”, giving it a 5/5.
Over in our ep discussion, Hannah has written: “That was one brilliant episode”, while Jay has said that the episode was “superb”. Bad Wolf agrees: “It feels so good to have the show back”, and A C pegg summarises: “Too much, too quick, too complicated”…
Series 6 continues next Saturday 3rd September in Night Terrors at 7pm on BBC One.
Completely awesomely wonderful. Answered questions, offered new ones, witty, clever, clearly River’s/Mels episode and both incarnations were great.Superb entertainment that had me hooked from the first till final second. Leaves you wanting more, more, more, please !
It makes me chuckle, all the negativity and every time Mr Moffat comes up trumps, it’s about time everyone accepts he is a genius with a plan and Alex Kingston was awesum I did not think it was possible to top her past performances but she did
Rating out of 10 , at least a 20
The good thing is that the final ratings are bound to be at eight to nine million which is something to shove in the face of the pessimists.
I wish we’d seen more of Mels before this. In general, we need more Amy/Rory backstory.
Loved this episode, ive now watched it seven times, its that good. Some very humourous moments in there, the best River Song story so far in my opinion because it explains so much… not to mention we see another regeneration ..only this time its the regeneration into the RIVER SONG that we know and love today. But just because weve got answers it doesnt mean that we completely know River/Melody… is there still a hidden agenda? Guess well have to wait and find out
Also, I have three ideas about what the oldest question in the world is and when silence will or may fall
1. Who am I?
2. Will you marry me?
3. PROBABLY THE RIGHT ANSWER…. DRUMROLL PLEASE……..
…..WHY?
Remember that question being asked in the almost people/rebel flesh? Its possible that WHY? is the question hidden in plain sight,
maybe because you should know the answer but choose not to see it and thats why you cant see it, hence the question being hidden
Doctor who?
is a perfect question for the series.
Also,
The chicken or the egg?
I hate it when newspapers like the mirror and the mail run the perpetual story of ‘Doctor Who’s falling ratings’. What do they expect initial viewing figures to be in the age of when you can’t miss a program? And as for the criticism that Moffat plots are too complicated, just because the neandertalistic minds can’t comprehend anything more complicated than celebrity nonsense doesn’t mean we all can’t.
I really don”t get the ratings thing, yes live views in uk are not as high, but the dvr views most make up for it, but what people such as the Mirror & Mail seam to forget is that the viewing figures worldwide especially in USA ( where I now live ) have increases dramatically and these people actually matter as it brings in rvenue and I would have thought the bigger the success oversear the more money it makes for the BBC at the end of the day it does not matter how many people watch live in UK the been doess not earn any extra revenue from them.
I suspect that if every single human being on the island of Great Britain had tuned in for two consecutive episodes, the press would merely say “Viewing figures flat for Doctor Who.”
I thought it was awesome. Brilliant episode! Absolutely brilliant! But we haven’t see the Egypt stuff, or River in a eyepatch yet, so River as the weapon against the Doctor clearly isn’t finished yet, though she’s obviously seriously rattled having found out about her relationship with the TARDIS.
It was nice to see explained her comment earlier about how she was taught to fly the TARDIS by “the best” and “pity [the Doctor] was busy that day”. Taught by the TARDIS herself!
I also thought it was nifty how Moffatt picked up bits that RTD had introduced (residual regeneration energy making Time Lords temporarily invincible — sort of like when you get a new guy in a lot of video games, where you’re invincible for a few seconds to avoid getting instantly killed whilst respawning in a dangerous spot) and also the rehash of one of the best gags from “Curse Of Fatal Death” (two adversaries, in this case the Doctor and River, anticipating one another’s moves and countering them in advance). I likied!
I don’t believe that Melody did a quick about face of her opinion of the Doctor. If you notice in those “death” scenes the Doctor isn’t asking Melody to help him, he’s reaching for and asking the TARDIS to help him. I believe the TARDIS then took Melody away and showed her the real Doctor and not what she was programmed to believe about him, a sort of de-programming. Then the TARDIS gave her the knowledge and the choice on whether or not to save the Doctor. The TARDIS and Melody could have been gone for years. This also explains how she knows all his incarnations, she really has seen him from the beginning. i really liked this episode a lot! Ratings be damned, they’re never accurate!
