Steven Moffat has spoken briefly about River Song’s return in this year’s Christmas Special, revealing that she’ll be back as the “kick ass hero” that fans know and love.

It was announced in September that the popular character – last seen in the Series 7 finale, The Name of the Doctor – will return for the festive escapade, which has already been billed as “essential viewing” this December. “We’ve shot that one, and it’s been a riot to do,” he told the Observer. “It’s a sort of a big fun chase episode, really. Just Mr and Mrs Who battling their way past nonsense, so it’s been great fun.”

He continued: “They’re lovely together, Peter and Alex, plus Alex is always great value. It’s time we used her properly, rather than using her as someone’s mum or sister and all that.”
