The long awaited episode, The Doctor’s Wife, was finally aired last night, and unofficial ratings show that it was watched by 5.9million viewers on BBC One, a 28.6% share of the total television audience.
The overnight figure makes Doctor Who the third most watched programme of the day, after the Eurovision Song Contest (1st) and Britain’s Got Talent (2nd). As usual, within seconds of its credits rolling, a TARDIS load of reviews began materialising online. Read on for our round up!
Kicking off the proceedings is Digital Spy, who have rated the latest episode 4 out of 5, adding that while it “isn’t perfect, you would be hard pressed to fault its ambition”, and the Telegraph has referred to Neil Gaiman’s signing as “something of a coup” for the series, before describing his “hugely enjoyable” story as “the best of this series so far”.
The Guardian was also left impressed by Neil’s “perfectly pitched” episode, revealing: “His script feels like a masterstroke in bringing his twisted fantasia to the show without ever smothering it. Love it or hate it, you’ll probably need a little lie down”. They’ve also invited fans to submit their questions about the episode for Neil which will be put to him live on Monday afternoon. Elsewhere, the episode is set to be “an instant classic” says the Metro, who offer particular praise for Suranne Jones’ “fantastic” peformance.
According to SFX, who have given it 4.5 out of 5, “this is how you do a great episode on a moderate budget”, while IGN have commented: “The Doctor’s Wife was a superlative 45 minutes of television that proved quite how imaginative and engaging a ‘done-in-one’ episode can be when put into the hands of a writer and cast at the top of their game”.
Immensely positive feedback overall! Do you agree/disagree with any of it? Tell us…

Digital Spy has released a new interview with Suranne Jones, in which the Idris actress says that looking after her top secret Doctor Who script was like “carrying the Crown Jewels around”!
“I can’t tell you anything,” she said. “You do Doctor Who, and you’re literally bound by secrecy. You get your script, and across it is ‘Suranne Jones’, so if you lose that script, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind who’s lost it. It’s like carrying the Crown Jewels around!”
She continued: “You’re kept away from all the fans that turn up for the filming, and with this script in particular, because it’s an old character with a new face, we’re not allowed to say anything about it. The script’s amazing, and Matt, Karen and Arthur were lovely.”
The official site also has part two of its chat with Neil Gaiman, in which the writer reveals what makes him happy! The Doctor’s Wife airs on Saturday at 6:30pm on BBC1.
The episode airs on Saturday and will see the Doctor “off on a mission of mercy”, as Neil describes it, when he receives a distress signal from an old friend which takes him to a junkyard planet. Could there really be another living Time Lord out there? And what is the beautiful and insane Idris trying to tell him?
