Work commences on new BBC Wales studios
The BBC have released a press release revealing that construction has officially begun on the previously reported BBC Cymru Wales production centre.
The new state-of-the-art drama village will be the home to Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2012, when they’ll bid a fond farewell to their current studios in Upper Boat. The first programmes to make use of the new external filming lots will be Casualty and Pobol y Cwm, which are set to relocate in the autumn of next year.
The new studios will be based at Cardiff Docks, and Director of BBC Cymru Wales, Menna Richards, has noted that this will enable a “dynamic new community” to be created right at the very heart of the city. She said: “As a centre of excellence for drama it will bring a brand new buzz to this historic part of Cardiff and will offer fantastic facilities and filming space to some of the BBC’s best-loved productions.”
Of course the biggest news for Who fans should be the strong indication that there will still be Doctor Who and Sarah Jane being produced come 2012!
I think this is absolutely appalling news. BBC have a TV centre in London, which I found out via the Planet Of Fire DVD, is nearly empty and not used. Also the BBC should not be allowed to waste licence money or money made through BBC Worldwide on building projects when they feed absolute rubbish on TV today. Most of the crap the BBC churn out is audience grabbing reality tv or quiz style programs. All money made by the BBC should be reinvested into the BBC Charter of providing Quality TV, even Doctor Who has suffered from this empire building ethos that now runs through the corporation.
I agree with alex.
I think a lot of the reason though, Steve, is that the BBC is trying to turn its attention away from London, and work in other parts around Britain, such as Cardiff.
I do agree that they need to work on making better shows.
And yes, this does look like very good news for the future of DW!
