Toby Whithouse tight-lipped about new series
As we await official confirmation regarding the full list of writers for Series 6, speculation is rife about just who will be putting pen to paper for the Eleventh Doctor’s second series – and now Toby Whithouse has added fuel to the fire!
Speaking during the Being Human panel at the San Diego Comic Con, the writer of School Reunion and The Vampires of Venice said he’s “contractually not allowed to say” whether or not he’ll be lending his creativity for the 2011 series. But the plot thickens!
As SFX report, the fact his contract forbids him from answering means he’s under one! Other writers who are rumoured for Series 6 include Paul Cornell and Tom MacRae, Richard Curtis and Mark Gatiss. Who would you like to see on the line-up?
Whithouse is an odd one for me. I love Being Human, but the two episodes of Who he’s scripted have hardly been standouts, so the idea of him doing another doesn’t fill me with any great joy. I mean, his episodes are watchable enough, but nothing special.
Of the other names suggested, a big YES to Paul Cornell, his two stories, Human Nature epsecially, were great. Tom Macrae, meh, unsure; I don’t think his Cyberman stroy in series two was that great, a middling one. Richard Curtis? Well, I loved his Van Gogh episode, but I’m not sure he’s suited to writing further stories, which is odd I know, considering I just said how much I loved his episode this year. Mark Gatiss? Yeah, I’m up for another slice of Gatiss.
I think Gareth Roberts will return for series 6, he seems as much of the writing team now as Mark Gatiss or Steven Moffat are. Deffo want to see Paul Cornell return (preferably with another 2 parter). I do agree with TWWL that Toby Whithouse’s episodes havent been standouts. They are good but just not that memorable.
To be honest I would like to see Matt Jones write for the new series. His first two doctor who episodes “Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit” were amazing episodes.
I’m not a fan of Mark Gatiss, he wrote Victory of The Daleks (no more needs saying) and acted in The Lazarus Experiment, probably one of my least favourite episodes of the Tennant era (yeah, even I don’t like some Tenth Doctor stories).
Otherwise, I’m not too knowledgable about writers in general, whoever will do a good job is good enough for me.
@pirko
To be honest, The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit was more RTD’s story than Jones’. Would love Toby to return after his fantastic episode this year. In my opinion, Gareth’s Doctor Who stories have sort of gone downhill from The Shakespeare Code, although The Lodger is an exception. Paul Cornell, Mark Gatiss and Richard Curtis: definite yes.
Tom Macrae: not sure. Given that we didn’t get to see his Series Four story, it’s hard to tell if there was any improvement from the abysmal Rise of the Cybusmen/The Age of Steel. But, if I were Moffat, I wouldn’t risk it.
@JC
Gatiss also wrote the wonderful Dickens episode from series 1, and the not bad ‘Idiots Lantern’ from series 2. I actually really liked Victory Of The Daleks, too.
I’d really like to see Gatiss do an all out creepy episode, if anyone saw the the ‘Crooked House’ mini-series he wrote that went out over the ‘08 Christmas period, you’ll know how well he can do that sort of story.
@pirko
I’d like to see someone else given a shot over Roberts, he’s written four Who stories now, and only this years ‘The Lodger’ really did it for me; three out of four isn’t a great hit rate. Give someone else a go.
@ TWWL
I do agree with you. I dont hold GR episodes with high regard. I am just saying that he seems to be heavily involved in the scripts over series 3, series 4, Planet of the Dead and series 5.
And Gatiss should get a chance to do a creepy episode.
I KNOW THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE THREAD BUT I JUST THOUGHT I’D SAY HOW MUCH I ENJOYED SHERLOCK! IT WAS A FANTASTIC EPISODE, SO CONTRAY TO POPULAR BELIEF (Steve) I DO LIKE MOFFAT. :)
