Steven comments on John Simm as the Master…
John Simm has expressed an interest in returning to Doctor Who in the future, Steven Moffat has revealed!
The showrunner has admitted that he was once pulled aside by the actor, who suggested that he wouldn’t say no to a comeback. “After his last appearance he’d been saying, ‘I think now that David’s left as the Doctor, I would have to leave the Master,” Moffat said at the Series 6 premiere screening in New York. “He later pulled me aside and said, ‘I didn’t mean that! Look at me, I’m fit, I’m okay!’”
Simm first appeared as the renegade Time Lord in the Series 3 episode, Utopia, and he later reprised the role for the Tenth Doctor’s final story, The End of Time. He has previously said that his memories from filming are ones he’ll “cherish forever”.

Thanks to JC for the tip!
I absolutely want to see The Master return later. Personally I hope he returns in series seven and it turns out he’s been watching The Doctor’s every move in amusement from a hiding spot in plain site like say Leadworth.
I know John Simm wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea when it came to the Master, I remember some commenting on the amount of laughing, but for a whole new generation of fans such as myself that joined the show when it was revived, he is The Master and for me, he was great in the role and I’d love to see him back.
I do think The Master needs to take a break though. He was at the end of Series 3 and in the Specials, where we saw him apparently disappear back into the Time War with the Time Lords, but the Master has a habit of surviving. All the same, I think like the Daleks, he needs some time away from the screen before bringing him back and I’d like it to be John Simm, because he was a great Master in my opinion, but also because the Doctor hasn’t lasted too long before regenerating and it’d nice to see a Time Lord with some real endurance.
As I said, I know he wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if David Tennant was “my Doctor” then John Simm was “my Master”……….I know how that sounds, lol, but you know what I mean
Would I like to see John Simm back as the Master? Well, let me think . . . .
YES!!!! Yesyesyesyesyesyes!!! That would be lovely! Though truth be told, I would’ve liked to have seen more of Derek Jacobi’s Master. Or would like to see some other great Shakespearean actors take it on. Can you imagine, say, Ian McKellan? Or . . . okay, he probably can’t, since he already did it for a parody, but Jonathon Pryce was simply magnificent in “Curse of Fatal Death” — I’d love to see him do the part for real.
Matt Smith and John Simm? That would be an interesting chemistry….
@The 13th Doctor
I had the same thought, I can already imagine bits of conversation between them, quite funny
I’d like the John Simm Master back if he had regained his faculties somewhat. I didn’t like the skeletony superpowery version of him in The End of Time, whereas I thought he was absolutely brilliant in 3.12/13.
I would have The Master back in a “heartsbeat”, but I’d like him to return back to his Season Three persona now that the issue of The Drums have been resolved.
Wickedly evil, with a veneer of respectability but with that insane streak underneath – more scary that way.
HELL YEAH!!!! My day made!!!!
I would love to see John Simm back as the master! I have said before that Last of the time lords was not the greatest story to reintroduce the character but made up for it in The End of Time.
It would be great to see him again even if it is just for a new regeneration
I really couldn’t see the Master working as a character anymore. Everything about who he is and why he’s like that seemed to be tied up in The End of Time. I actually think the Master’s time is up. The Rani, however…
@TE
He’s worked for about forty years, i don’t see why he couldn’t carry on.
I don’t think the Delgado or Ainley Masters were ever affected by “the drums”. At least, we never saw that happen. It took until the ending of the Time War for the Time Lords to send “the drums” back to him. So, to me, that’s a timeline which we didn’t see. The Master-kid still always looked into the Vortex (or whatever) and I think that THAT is what caused his insanity/malevolence.
I have to agree with Calli up above there in that I would rather see more of Derek Jacobi’s Master. In the 5 minutes or so that he actually portrayed the Master (as opposed to the Professor) he was (for me) much more convincing in the role than John Simm was in the totality of his appearances in the role.
I’d like the Master to come back as a friend of the Doctor. Y’know, the drumming thing lasted his entire life which apparently was the thing that made him crazy in the first place but before this they were the best of friends. If the drums stopped, then technically he should be normal-ish. The evil personality of the Master would probably still be there.. but if he were to be a companion of the Doctor, he could gradually lose it (no longer being evil) entirely and become as crazy as the Doctor is. It’d be fun.
I’ve had enough of the Master being bad now, bring him back as a good-ish guy. He was tempted to join the Doctor during End of Time, and they would make a great team. Loved Scream of the Shalka with the Master inside a cyborg while being imprisoned inside the tardis an enemy coming back who isnt an enemy? Never been done in DW has it? Would make for a good spin-off show. “Master Who” lol
Hi, just sweeping by and leaving that behind to take a look at and may be…join!

To me, it makes sense that the Master doesn’t change, it’s kind of what made you hate the Master in the first place with old Who. Whilst .your. Doctor regenerates and changes, the bad guy doesn’t, he annoyingly carries on, it’s exactly what makes the character more hateable.
