Rate & Discuss: The Doctor’s Wife
The Doctor receives a distress signal from an old friend. Could there really be another living Time Lord out there? Hopes raised, he follows the signal to a junkyard planet sitting a mysterious asteroid in a Bubble universe, populated by a very strange family. As the Doctor investigates, he puts his friends in the gravest danger.
In one of the most anticipated episodes of the new series so far, the Doctor, Amy and Rory faced shocks, scares and Ood – and we were with them for every step of the way!
As the first Doctor Who episode to be penned by acclaimed fantasy and sci-fi writer Neil Gaiman, it was always going to be one to go down in history. Of course, the fact that it’s called ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ adds to the overall intrigue factor, and ever since the title was revealed back in March, our brains have been racing with all kinds of outlandish theories and questions. The answers were finally revealed tonight, along with some surprises…
As well as the mysteries surrounding the beautiful and insane Idris, we were also given an all access pass to the TARDIS, which came hand in hand with its very own array of secrets. Along the way, there were blasts from the past and insights into the future, but was the episode worth all the hype that preceded it? Did it exceed your expectations?
The Doctor’s Wife has been described as “a real love letter” to the fans, but was it a love letter worth reading? Were you left delighted or disappointed? You can let us know what you thought about tonight’s epic adventure in the comments section. Happy discussing!
i loved this episode so much, was my favourite episode ever i think! the storyline was amazing, with the personification of the tardis was ingenius. and most of all the acting was amazing! the way surrane jones played Idris was amazing, i think to play the charactor of the tardis which was so weird and wonderfully mad was really hard and i didn’t think surrane had it in her but she really did excell all of the acting was wonderful, loved the relationship between the doctor and the tardis and loved the ’sexy’ quotes about what he calls the tardis was soo funny! i liked the idea of the whole tardis, was about time you see all the other parts of the tardis and get to know more of the charactor we allways see but know nothing about i am actually really glad they didn’t add many series archs to this episode as i think it would ruin the amazing balance it already has. ‘the only water in the forest is a river’ well that probably means river song and maybe the only water means not a pond, ie amy POND, so perhaps it means something has happened to amy? hmm dunno; overall i absolutely loved this episode, all the cast, crew, and writer neil gaimen did their job amazingly and made the ep one of the best i have ever seen (maybe even the best) loved it
I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. The best of this series so far (the first two were great, but as it stands, too confusing. However, at the end of the series, when we know what all the twists were about, that may change. Episode three was great too, but not above the norm (for doctor who anyway)). Even though the idea of the TARDIS manifesting itself as a sentient being wasn’t new (See:Zagreus) it was still entertaining, and definitely fulfilled the description of “Changing the way you look at doctor who forever”.
Here’s hoping for more great contributions from Neil. Is it to soon to say for Neil to replace Moffat when he eventually leaves? (Not saying I want the moff to leave. He’s awesome.)
Now, I think I’m going to go and order a couple of Neil’s books. I’ve been looking for something to read, and I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him before doctor who!
Oh yeah, and confidential was awesome too. Neil Gaiman even sounds like an author when he reads scripts.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: The acting was fantastic (on Matt’s, Karen’s, Arthur’s and Surrane’s part), and the CGI was pretty great too. I also loved the art direction.
Oh, and the old TARDIS interior seems really quaint and soothing these days. I felt oddly nostalgic, even though I still frequently watch the older series’ (I watch them all about once a year in sequence, and the odd one here and there)
I would have loved the scene with the pool to have been in there. And maybe have them run through multiple console rooms(although, that may not have made much sense plotwise.)
They do have Davison’s TARDIS ready made afterall in the Doctor who experience!
Actually, decided not to be driven out. At the end of the day, some of my questions were answered because of things I hadn’t noticed, so the rudeness served something.
As for the rest of my questions, they weren’t a desire for answers from the episode, more for answers later on so I didn’t want to be spoon fed everything right away, you know.
I think my initial disappointment is subsiding now, the episode was what it was and there were good points. Clearly, I didn’t notice some bits and pieces, so I’ll be watching it again on iPlayer at some point
@JC
im with u on ur 2 comments above about rudeness and spoon fed
@JC
its repeated on bbc 3 tomara evening and then again on bbc 3 on friday before the next eipisode on saturday just to let u no
@shawn
Thanks for the information Shawn
I thought it was a great episode! The dialogue was top notch. Suranne Jones completely surpassed all expectations I had for Idris. The fact that Idris was The Tardis was brilliant. Definitely rewatching it to try and soak up all the little tidbits of awesomeness I tend to miss on the first viewing.
“Did you wish REALLY hard?”
can i just say the new message on the fourth dimension tab for ‘the doctor’s wife’ is; ‘to see what saw click on the spot beyond the home planet’ don’t really get it but thats all i got from the italics, what do you think?
sorry it’s; ‘to see what saw click on the spot beyond the Doctor’s home planet’*
@JC
no problems i always watch the show 3 times in the week except last weeks i could only stand to watch it once lol
This one absolutely nailed it. It really was Neil Gaiman’s “love letter” to the series. Finally the TARDIS got an episode of her own, and we were given a new insight into the Doctor’s relationship with her from her perspective. The idea that they mutually “stole” each other is lovely and quite romantic in a way. I made a joking comment some time ago that the TARDIS might turn out to be the “wife” of the title, and it seems I was right.
There were just a lot of great emotional moments in this episode, both heart-breaking, touching, and frightening. This should easily take its place as one of the few ‘new classics’ of the revived series.
I really enjoyed the episode it was brilliant and very clever,
I wasnt expecting that Idris was the TARDIS,
it is a bit of a shame that you didnt get to see the monster but it was cool how he played with Amy and Rory. I found it really funny at the beginning how she kissed the doctor and then bit him. The TARDIS they constructed was a bit wierd as it had 2 walls ^^ But the 9/10 Tardis was a good flashback of doctor who.
I gave this episode **** four stars, not as brilliant and clever as episode 1 and 2 but still clever and funny
Not a great episode, but not as bad as “black spot”. Did anyone else notice that the gateway between dimensions looked like the crack in Amys wall.
I’m still convinced we’re working in a multi dimensional story arc, and come the end Amy will wake up with her baby….
@Ellen
the tardis that they constructed was actually a blue peter competition and a girl won it so that tardis that idris and the doctor put together was the girl who won the blue peter comp. it was to design your own tardis and whoever won would have their tardis in a dr who episode
i didnt even no it was a blue peter competition until i watched doctor who confidential lol but now i do
@JC you misunderstand, I am not trying to say you require it being spoonfed to you, just that not all of the information in an episode needs to be right there at the surface.
As for you perceiving my comments as rude I think perhaps there is some oversensitivity there to be honest! I was merely trying to fill in those gaps in a concise manner. Those things would probably never be covered directly in the show so I wanted to clear it up, and in turn allow you to give the episode the credit it deserves.
I would not advocate being forced out by comments such as mine as that is not my intent, healthy discussion is always welcome and that is what these comments are for after all.
I would suggest in this type of environment just not taking things quite so personally.
We are all here, I hope, out of love for the show, I don’t think falling out over trivialities is necessary, YMMV.
Just so bloody lovely. What a simple, brilliant idea for an episode, it makes you wonder why no-one has decided to give the TARDIS a voice before. And I’d always suspected that the TARDIS had more say over the destination that the Doctor did – nice to have it confirmed.
The episode was perhaps not as Gaiman-esque as some people expected, but that’s a good thing. He didn’t let his quirks and trademarks overshadow the episode. This wasn’t Neil Gaiman putting his stamp on Doctor Who, this was just a really, really good episode of Doctor Who. With added patchwork people (which is very Gaiman).
Great performance from Suranne Jones, Matt Smith’s Doctor showing real emotion for the first time, a glimpse at the rest of the TARDIS, some brilliant off-the-wall dialogue, a great new tantalising hint (the only water in the forest is the river) – what more could you want from Doctor Who? Magnificent.
Oh, and the sight of the old TARDIS console sent my hand fluttering to my chest with overpowering nostalgia. Just so lovely. Made me miss the old TARDIS a bit…
Oh, and I loved that the human TARDIS called the Doctor her Thief. Genius.
LOVED this episode, LOVED the dialogue, and LOVED the personified Tardis.
Disclaimer: Maybe this will sound rude to you but I think it needs to be said
@JC
First, they Classic and Revived series are the same show with a nine (ten?) year hiatus in between. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you but you seem to be treating them as two separate shows, like DW and Torchwood. Yeah, people prefer Classic to Revived, or Revised to Classic, but you can’t get upset that the Revived show is linked back to its roots.
Second, the first ever DW episode I saw was the Christmas Invasion, and then watched series 1,2,3,4 all in 2009. I’ve also seen a number of classic episodes in the past two years.
So I’m a very very recent fan of DW (but an ardent one, obviously) and I manage to completely understood the connection that the Doctor has to the Tardis. There really isn’t any more to the back story than: the Doctor took the Tardis to go travel because he didn’t want to be stuck on Galifrey with the boring old Time Lords. That’s the same story that’s been told (in the Revived series!) and no Classic fans have any more inside knowledge than that. The only extra bit of info they have is more knowledge of the adventures the Doctor has been on.
Again, sorry if I offend you JC but honestly sometimes judging by your comments I don’t know why you still watch the show. You don’t seem to like any of the episodes!
And there I go with the spelling errors
*-the- Classic and Revived series
