The Telegraph has a new feature interview with Matt Smith about Cargese, his directorial debut.

The short film written by Simon Stephens premieres tonight (Thursday) on Sky Arts and Matt reveals what attracted him to the project, which tells the story of two teenagers living on a council estate. “I just wanted to work with Simon who’s a brilliant writer,” Matt said. “I like his type of film making. I like big, square, flat, wide frames, and doing the day job I do, it’s just a different emotional context to explore.”

He admitted: “I was so nervous the day before the shoot. You turn up to do a rehearsal and then you’ve got to start choosing where you put the camera and why the camera is there. Having to make these choices was difficult. I’m not massively decisive in my life!”

But the Eleventh Doctor actor’s experience behind the camera has fuelled his passion for directing, as he has big plans for the future. “I’d like to direct a science-fiction film,” he said. “Stanley Kubrick is the man to follow – a film in every genre!” Matt’s latest acting project is in Ryan Gosling’s How to Catch a Monster in which he is “a sort of bad guy”.
