An audience of nearly 11 million people tuned in for the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who last night.

As BBC News reports, the initial overnight ratings show that a peak of 10.61 million viewers joined the Doctors on their landmark journey which celebrated half a century of his TV adventures.

The Day of the Doctor beat X Factor over on ITV where the singing contest was watched by 7.7 million people.

It finished second only to Strictly Come Dancing which peaked with 11.7 million viewers.

“I’m astonished and moved – and that’s only the score so far, that’s just the overnights,” showrunner Steven Moffat commented. “I speak from personal experience when I say there’s nothing better than turning 50 and knowing you’ve still got it. Go get em Doctor!”

The total figure with cinema attendance added will be interesting to see. Add that in and I am confident the audience share will go off the scale and Strictly “will be the pebble in his lake” to quote the Twin Dilemma.
