Steven says next companion is “someone new”
Steven Moffat has responded to speculation that Clara will be replaced in the TARDIS by a character that has already been introduced in the series.
The outgoing companion will bow out of the show at some point during Series 9 (hold on to your hats, by the way – her exit will “shock and terrify”!) with fans already eagerly anticipating the identity of the Doctor’s next coveted sidekick. Naturally, familiar faces from the show’s recent past are high on their wishlists, with the likes of Osgood, Shona McCullough and Ashildr continuously in the frame.
According to the man in charge, however, the Doctor will seemingly be joined by “someone new” for Series 10 and beyond. “Somebody like Osgood is a great character and we love her,” he said. “But it’s not really a relaunch if you bring someone on board the TARDIS who has already been there. It worked well with Donna, but it’s not the direction we’re taking.”
He also wants the next companion to be Clara’s opposite, suggesting that they’ll be “a little more earthy” than their predecessor, citing the “working class” Rose Tyler as an example.
