The BBC has announced the principal cast members who will be starring in the brand new Doctor Who spin off, Class.

Today (Monday) officially marks the first day of filming on the new 8-part drama, which bas been created and written by award-winning YA author Patrick Ness. The show will introduce us to four sixth formers – Greg AustinFady ElsayedSophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah - alongside former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly, whose role has been described as “a teacher and powerful new presence at Coal Hill School”.

Like all sixth formers, these four Coal Hill School students have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow – and possibly the end of existence.

Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who Universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time-travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.

Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming.

Class will premiere on BBC Three later this year, with further casting announcements soon.

I was really dreading this show but the synopsis has reassured me that there’s a pretty good chance that this will be a mature, exciting show and I am very excited about Doctor Who going back to spin off shows because I loved the Sarah Jane Adventures, hell I found moments on that show more scarier than actuall Doctor Who episodes!

And since there’s no Doctor Who this year that means all the more reason to look forwards to this show! Does anyone know when it will premiere?

I also love that it’s gonna be more mature. The fact that the word Sex is used alone makes sure this isn’t in the SJA catagory of show type. That and the description of the whole something trying to break through the fabric of reality to end all existence, shows it’s gonna be more similar to early seasons, still light hearted Torchwood. SJA dealt with Aliens trying to pull a moon towards earth as finales so. lol

I think I was expecting something younger as well, kind of a School Reunion type show with younger kids, so sixth formers makes it more interesting. At the moment, it kind of feels like a mix between the SJA and Torchwood with something trying to break through to our universe to destroy everything reminding me of the Rift and Abaddon from Series 1.

I’m not sure about the premise that the amount of time travel around Coal Hill School has made it a weak point. Admittedly, the 11th Doctor said that time travel was damage and that it was like a tear in the fabric of reality, which is perhaps where Patrick Ness got the idea, but has the Doctor really travelled to Coal Hill enough to cause that amount of damage?

Also, if that’s the case, why doesn’t The Doctor or any other Time Lord care that they’re doing damage wherever they travel in time and space? Why doesn’t the Tardis, considering its sensitivity to issues with time?

Hopefully some of those questions will be answered, especially if the 12th Doctor does guest star.
