What’s On TV have posted a new interview with Alex Kingston, in which she discusses her return as River Song in this week’s episode, The Time of Angels.
“When she was introduced two years ago, she’s a time-travelling archaeologist, and I think she only travels in time through the Doctor. She has a very close relationship with the Doctor from the future,” she explains. ”When he requires her to or when she feels the need, she will travel back in time to one of his previous incarnations.”
She added: ”In terms of her relationship with the Doctor right now, she has travelled back into his past, but it’s also her future… It’s a little complicated! She has met this Doctor before, although he hasn’t met her yet in his incarnation, except that he remembers when he was David Tennant. He remembers seeing her die - so he knows her future. He knows the bit she doesn’t know. God, it’s so complicated!”
Steven Moffat has posted a blog entry to BBC Blogs in which he shares his own personal account of the very first day of filming – 20th July 2009.
On that day, the eyes of the world turned to Southerndown Beach in South Wales, as Matt Smith and Karen Gillan kicked off production for Series 5, joined by returning guest star Alex Kingston as River Song! Time really does fly, as the scene they filmed that day appears in this Saturday’s episode, The Time of Angels!
In the blog, the showrunner reveals: “I vividly remember arriving on that beach. I saw the TARDIS in the distance, which was very much the culmination of all that time waiting to get started – which you could argue was two and a half years, or 40 years for me.”
In addition, the official Doctor Who website has now been updated with the introduction video for the episode, as well as 3 tantalizing preview clips!

“The weight of evidence seems to be in the favour of River being the Doctor’s wife,” the showrunner teases, “but things will be revealed about her that suggest the truth might not be as simple as both the viewers and the Doctor assumed.”
He also comments on the positive critical response the new series has recieved so far, promising that the best is still yet to come! He explains: ”I was braced for it to take several weeks for the public to adjust to a new Doctor, because that’s been the case in the past. I was avoiding reviews in the papers and, when I saw several of them describe Matt as the best Doctor ever, it was delightful. But he has got so much more to show everyone – just wait until the finale, in which he is quite magnificent…”
