The final chapter of the First Doctor’s regeneration serial is to be animated for DVD release, it has been confirmed.

Up until now the fourth instalment of The Tenth Planet has been lost. While it remains missing, fans will soon be able to enjoy the conclusion to William Hartnell’s era thanks to this animated reconstruction of those dramatic events that led to his regeneration into Patrick Troughton.

The DVD is scheduled to be released in late 2013.

“It is a real thrill to be bringing such an iconic Doctor Who episode back to life,” said Dan Hall, commissioning editor of the classic Doctor Who series DVDs. “Without those events established in The Tenth Planet episode 4 there would be no Doctor Who as we know it!”

As a teaser an exclusive clip of the regeneration scene has been released. See it below:

Lead Animator Chris Chapman commented: “We knew that we had to throw everything at this scene. The whole story is historic, with the first appearance of the Cybermen, so we worked hard on it. It was a pleasure – it’s definitely made me a fan of Doctor Who.”
