Russell Tovey has revealed that he’s a huge fan of Matt Smith and that he’s confident the new Time Lord will be a hit with fans when he takes over from David Tennant next year.
The actor, who appeared in the 2007 Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned, as Midshipman Alonso Frame, was thrilled when he found out the BBC had cast Smith in the iconic role.
“Matt Smith is awesome,” he said. “He’s a fantastic actor. I’m a big fan of his. I think he’ll be brilliant.”
He added: “The joy of the Doctor’s part is that he’s everyman, he can be anybody so whoever comes in can put their own stamp on it.”
Last year, Who’s outgoing showrunner Russell T Davies revealed that he wanted Tovey to be cast as the next Doctor, after being impressed by his peformance in the festive episode, which also guest starred Kylie Minogue as Astrid Peth.

The BBC has today put the world out of its misery by confirming the identity of the actress who will take on the role of the Doctor’s new companion in Series 5 of Doctor Who!
Karen Gillan, 21, from Scotland, is set to star alongside the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, when the programme returns to its full 13-week run next Spring.
And if Gillan looks at all familiar to you, it’s because she’s previously appeared as a soothsayer in the Series 4 episode, The Fires of Pompeii. Just like Freema Agyeman – who appeared in Series 2 as Adeola before being cast as Martha Jones in Series 3 – she’ll be making a huge leap from a small part to one of the biggest and most loved roles on British TV.
“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion,” Gillan said. “The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him - I just can’t wait to get started!”
Meanwhile, new showrunner, Steven Moffat, who will oversee Matt and Karen’s series, said: “We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it.”
He added: “A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too.”

But they’ve still got a job to do, and this time the team are faced with their fiercest threat to date, and one which will change Torchwood, and the entire human race, forever. But as they battle against the odds, do they stand a chance of saving mankind?
The BBC has confirmed that the Royal Shakespeare Company’s recent production of Hamlet will be filmed as a drama for broadcast on BBC Two, with David Tennant reprising the main role.
Following on from the production’s overwhelming success, Illuminations have been given the greenlight to shoot the famous Shakespeare play out on location. Not only will Tennant be back, but all of the principal cast members will also return, including Patrick Stewart, who played Claudius.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for BBC Two to bring one of the great stage successes of last year to a wider audience,” said Janice Hadlow, BBC Two Controller.
Meanwhile, RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd said: “We are very pleased that this RSC production will be seen by so many people when broadcast.”
He added: “As the show was sold out for its entire run, this is a really great opportunity for our work to be seen by so many who could not come to the theatre and see it on stage.”
Filming will begin in June and the 180-minute production will air on BBC Two later this year, with tranmissions in America and Japan currently set for early 2010.
David Tennant will be back as the Tenth Doctor for the Doctor Who movie, according to a report in My Park Magazine.
According to the article, the actor will be reprising the role of the Time Lord for the big screen adventure, even though he’s leaving the show at the end of the year.
“The script is still in the early stages but he wants to be in the film,” a BBC Films source has been quoted as saying. “There have already been discussions and David needs to feel the story is right, but right now things are looking very positive.
“Potentially it’s a perfect scenario for him. He understandably wants to do different roles but still loves Doctor Who.”
The source added: “It’s certainly feasible that David could be the Doctor on film while Matt does the series. As all fans know David’s story can easily be set in a different time to Matt’s. That’s one of the great things about the show – anything can happen.”

Lizo Mzimba has today confirmed via his Twitter page that BBC Films are currently working on a script for a Doctor Who movie!
Even though this is exciting news, it’s worth pointing out that a feature-length film has been on the cards for a while now, therefore this doesn’t guarantee that the Doctor will definitely be making his way to the big screen. But at least we can take comfort in the fact that they’re at least discussing possible storylines, cast and budgets!
Obviously, the planning stage for any film takes some time, so it could be months until we hear any official word, and there’s sadly always the possibility that it won’t go ahead at all. We’ll, of course, keep you updated!
Australian Whovians will finally get to see this year’s Doctor Who Easter special when the episode makes its official debut Down Under this weekend!
The seasonal adventure sees the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) joining forces with Lady Christina (Michelle Ryan) when the bus they are travelling on takes a dangerous detour into a world of terror.
Planet of the Dead will transmit on ABC1 on Saturday 31st May at 7:30PM. Enjoy the show!
Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures will see Sarah Jane and her friends joining forces with the Tenth Doctor when the TARDIS arrives on Bannerman Road.
It has been confirmed that David Tennant will be making a guest appearance in the CBBC series, meaning the Time Lord will be reunited with his old friend, Sarah Jane, as well as everybody’s favourite metal dog – K-9!
And it won’t be just a quick cameo either; the Doctor will be sticking around for two whole episodes, thought to be episodes 5 and 6, to help Sarah Jane, Luke, Clyde, Rani and K-9 do battle with their greatest enemy yet!
“When I heard the news that David was going to be joining us I was absolutely over the moon. Not only has it made my day but it will also make the viewers’ day,” said Elisabeth Sladen. “It’s fantastic news that Sarah Jane is going to spend some time working with The Doctor again and is testament to just how successful this CBBC series is.”
But as we’ve come to expect by now, the episodes and their content are being kept tightly under wraps, but we have been told that the story is written by Gareth Roberts.
“Viewers thought they may have to wait until November for the next full episode of Doctor Who, but this is an extra special treat,” SJA creator, Russell T Davies, added. “And it’s not just a cameo from David - this is a full-on appearance for The Doctor as he and Sarah Jane face their biggest threat ever.”
Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures will introduce fans to a brand new alien race, a reptilian species known as the Veil, but they’ll be joined by their enemies, the Judoon. We’ll also meet an extraterrestrial girl that can make people play games against their own will, as well as a living painting, the inhabitants of a supposedly haunted house, and monsters who want to infect Earth with a strangely aggressive weed. And will Sarah Jane Smith find personal happiness when she meets someone who could be the perfect person to complete her family?
