We wouldn’t have missed it for the world
Today, 26th March 2010, is a date that holds particular significance in Doctor Who mythology, as it marks the fifth anniversary of the revived series!
On this day back in 2005, the Doctor returned to BBC One after an absence of 16 years, and the first episode, Rose, was watched by an audience of 10.81million.
1825 days later, the series is still going from strength to strength, with the latest episode, The End of Time, Part Two, being watched by 12million on January 1st!
And it all kicks off again a week tomorrow, with a brand new Doctor at the helm! And with a sixth series already confirmed, it’s safe to say our beloved Time Lord will be with us for a good while yet. Fantastic! Allons-y! Geronimo!
Please join us as we reflect on the last half of a decade by sharing your own personal new series highlights below. It’s time to get nostelgic!
WOW! :O I can’t believe I forgot! :O There are too many awesome memories to pick but I am so overwhelmed its been five years, seems only last month. :O
Brilliant news, I can’t believe it has been 5 years..two Doctors..doesn’t seem that long xD
That’s just fantastic news! And, with the additional news that Matt has no plans to leave any time soon, Doctor Who definitely seems like it will reach it’s fiftieth anniversary in 2013.
Personal New Series highlight: the fact that the show was revived, and I don’t personally think any other aspect of the show that I like could top that little thing.
I remember this as the day I became a whovian for a new generation. Couldnr watch it at first cos i was working but then watched it following day, on sky plus, and fell in love with it.
Wow…five years to this day. I remember sitting down in the kitchen five years ago watching this first episode.
And it’s hard to believe but there are clearly a lot of so-called fans who seem to wish the last 5 years never happened. Over on one of the fan boards someone posted that clip from Vampires of Venice that was released today, and people were spending most of the time saying “good riddance RTD”. This made the anniversary a bit tainted, for me anyway. It’s been a fantastic five years, and a lot of people appreciate what we’ve had (and still have), but clearly there are some pretty ungrateful people out there too. Nonetheless, it’s amazing that it’s been five years already, and without fear of contradiction I do feel it has produced some of the best television – any genre – the medium has seen in years. And with any luck – and this is no knock on RTD – the best is still to come.
5 years since I started watching, wow. This has gone so fast but it has been a great 5 years. My favourite part has to have been david tennant becoming the 10th doctor. He is amazing and I will miss him. So here comes the future and lets hope we get 5 years of Moff. :D
I’m glad that Doctor Who was revived in 2005 because had it not been, I don’t think I’d have ever watched Doctor Who, because I was too young to catch any of the old series (the show was cancelled three years after I was born) and only knew the bare minimum facts about it.
I started watching Doctor Who the day the 9th Doctor regenerated into the 10th. I just happened to watch it and was hooked from that episode. I’ve since seen a lot of the 9th Doctor episodes and although slightly skeptical at first, am now positive about the 11th Doctor.
I too hope Doctor Who continues to do well, as it is an iconic British show and as long as they don’t get complacent, budgets don’t get too low and the quality is maintained, there’s no reason it shouldn’t.
Highlight… oh, goodness, I have to think about this.
Tooth and Claw, “I am NOT amused” and Rose and the Doctor’s reactions. That snippet makes me laugh aloud not just whenever I watch it, but whenever I think of it. See, I’m laughing now! That’s an achievement.
And The Doctor’s Daughter, in the little cell with Jenny, Donna and the Doctor, and the music “This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home” fades in.
Five years. Goodness. Here’s to the fiftieth anniversary in 2013!
