Silences, Rivers and Songs – Series 6 discussion

It was in The Eleventh Hour we were first told of the mysterious silence, but we’re still no closer to finding out what it is, or, more importantly, what’s behind it…

Steven Moffat has promised us that all of our questions will be answered in Series 6, and we’ve been left with plenty of clues to dissect until it hits our screens! What ominous figure could possibly blow up the TARDIS, and what could be their motives for doing it? We’ve also heard what’s seemingly their voice – does it sound at all familiar?

Could it have anything to do with River Song, who’s identity we’ll also discover next year? In The Big Bang she told the Doctor that everything will change when he finally learns who she is – not the most inviting of prophecies, and we’re sure you’ve all got your own weird and wonderful theories whizzing aimlessly through your Doctor Who obsessed minds. So, it’s about time we gave you somewhere to share them, isn’t it?

Feel free to speculate the remaining nights until Christmas away on this post, a link to which will be posted on the sidebar so you can check back to see what our other visitors make of this ever-growing series arc. People say silence is a virtue, but something tells us things will be far from virtuous for the Doctor when this particular one takes over…

    Anyone think there could be a connection between River and the OOD? No one seems to be connecting the three unknowns here:
    1. unknown- how the OOD are evolving so quickly
    2. unknown- River song
    3. unknown- the silence
    connections: The OOD may bring on the silence, River is a part of the silence, knowingly or not, and the silence may cause her to kill the doctor (who, of course, would not stay dead).

    @Zinbo
    Maybe you’re right. River is involved with the silence somehow.

    Whatever the true identity of River, and who she kills, most of the ideas I hear seem to be complicated and confused. Remember the ‘Bad Wolf’ idea in series one? Lots of complicated fan ideas but in the end all very simple, Rose is the Bad Wolf. I suspect the truth when revealed will be equally something simple for many millions of viewers who do not study each script in detail to grasp. This is also very much about Steven Moffat’s characters and ideas, so the solutions will come out of his episodes/ series five alone.

    I reckon you’re right. That’s the problem with picking up on every small detail – we assume they’re all important. But it’s got to work for casual viewers as well. It can be timey wimey, sure, but it can’t say “and you remember this throwaway line in Forest of the Dead – well, it’s a vitally important factor in explaining both the Silence and who River Song is!”

    Although The Silence is all very alluring, I am more interested in that of the Timeship that was in The Lodger and seems to once again be featuring in Series 6 (unless it is a different one, or is actually another TARDIS – possible other Timelord activity), the rumours and speculations of the Sontarans duplicating/cloning The Doctor and the TARDIS, The Ood’s return (why are they bad guys again????), and one of the scenes in the Series 6 Trailer depicts Amy with the writing on her face looking up at something in fear, but the room around her looks like her room in Leadworth. Could her house and those markings on the grass have a part in Series 6?????

    I have a filling River was a nobody, like Rose, Martha, Sarah Jane, others(the list is VERY long) But because she met the Doctor and their live became SO inter-twined that she is now a someone… or she just might be Donna Noble regenerated(who I have my own theory about). The Ood are the Ood, we don’t know how far in the future these new Ood are.
    However the Silence and the “Dream Lord” I think is have a conection. I think the Dream Lord is thying (again) to kill the Doctor and still his remaining regenerations… I hope they bring the Master back, he was one of a handfull that saved the Doctor from him in the past.
    Fun what you learn about the Doctor when you watch the “Classic” Doctor Who Episodes. Oh and the TARDIS from the Lodger… I wouldn’t be surprised it that was either the Master’s TARDIS or an early prototype gone rogue.

    If the Doctor-in-the-Tardis does not know, then maybe River, the other Doctor, does.

    Anyone thought that she might be the REAL Amelia?
    And Amy is an Imperfect Doppelganger.
    Riversong really does dress up in costumes, goes to parties and kisses people.
    And, in the pre-title sequence in the Eleventh Hour who else was in the Tardis that the Doctor peered at just before the Tardis split in two?

    Or then again, River could even be the daughter of the brand new Mr Monroe.

    When I watched the Doctor Who commentary for the Eleventh Hour episode, Moffat confirmed that the shadow running past in the kitchen was indeed the Doctor but from the future most definitely I reckon The Big Bang when he goes to see Amelia and tell her the story about him and the ancient,borrowed blue, but brand new TARDIS (interior) so she would remember in the future. About the TARDIS causing the cracks that looks very clever. The regeneration from Tennant to Smith was fantastic especially with the burning TARDIS. Remember the final companion that the 10th Doctor said goodbye to which was Rose Tyler (save the best for last). she said it was January 1st 2005 and in the Eleventh Hour its 1996 which means the TARDIS must have either gone through a crack or the TARDIS created the crack itself but an external force perhaps?

    @Valeyard12.5
    You have a point. The reason we’re so drawn in by the Silence is that it was mentioned explicitly. The time ship was never given much attention – scarily little, in fact. If it is a vital factor, then I think there should have been further mention to it. If it isn’t, then why on earth did no one think that every Whovian would be going “there’s someone else building time machines!”? There’s been no catering for that at all.

    I’m convinced Moffat’s masterplan started at the beginning of his tenure. What happened at the beginning. 10th Doctor regenerates and TARDIS starts to self destruct. This could be when the TARDIS blew up. We were never given a reason why the TARDIS started to self destruct. I don’t care about excess energy from regeneration causing it. No way. Of course the events of 11th hour show that TARDIS didn’t blow up. So what’s really going on … only the grand Moff knows for sure. But remember one thing. In 11th hour, we see twice the Doctor leave Amy/Amelia. Who knows what happens here. And the Doctor is clearly aware of the crack at this early stage (turning off the monitor so Amy wont see it). The Doctor knows things and isn’t telling. Even when he sees dream lord’s face reflected back at him at end of Amy’s choice, he keeps it secret. He doesn’t look surprised. I have a feeling that this Doctor will be a far greater manipulator of events than the 7th Doctor ever was, by the time Moffat’s saga is over.

    I just watched The Eleventh Hour with the commentary. SM confirmed that the Doctor saw the crack on the monitor, but was only interested at this stage, not scared or overly involved. He really didn’t know what it was.

    I’m sorry if everyone already knows this, but I was listening to the Audiobook The hounds of Artemis, and in one scene, Amy runs past “A large, smiling, crack in the wall. I didnt realise that the cracks in time appeared in other media to the T.V. Do they also feature in the 2010 doctor who novels?

    SM has also said he’s allowed to lie. Trust nothing he says.
