Matt Smith has revealed that he hopes the writers find a way around the ongoing regeneration limit mystery, as he feels there’s no end to the show’s ”boundless” format.

Speaking to The Big Issue in Scotland recently, the Eleventh Doctor actor responded to THAT line as heard in the latest series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, explaining: “That’s a Russell question. You’d have to ask him because he’s better equipped to deal with that. I have no idea. I merely concentrate on number 11.”

He continued: “The rest, once they get to 13, that’s their problem to worry about. I certainly want Doctor Who to go on forever, it’s just wonderful. The format of it allows the storytelling to be limitless and totally creative from one week to the next and without restraint, so why not? It’s lasted this long. Why shouldn’t it go on?”

Matt also praises his “brilliant” co-star Karen Gillan in the interview, admitting that it ”would be different being up in Cardiff” without her around, and predicting that “she’s going to go on to do great things”. However, he remained tight-lipped when pressed on her future as Amy Pond, noting: “If I told you, I’d have to come and kill you.”

    Part of me wants to see the limit remain 12 then a reboot. Although if they wanna bypass it they should just explain as Time Lords showed up for the Time War, their Regens would be replenished so they could get the most out of each fighter.

    I kinda want it to stay at twelve aswell but, 507 regenerations sounds good to me….!! I’d hate dr who to drag on for too long though and end on a bad not….:(

    I think I’d rather it stop when its still amazing instead of keep going for ages and end up getting cancelled because noones watching (like it did when Sylvester Mccoy was Seven) :)

    What if the doctor got more regenerations after the death of his race? Maybe the Timelords restricted individuals to thirteen in order to prevent any one of them becoming too powerful (The Master has already surpassed the amount, pherhaps because hes renegade?) The doctor is now allowed to as he is one of the only ones left?

    Well, if people can watch more than one series of x factor, then I’m sure Doctor Who will be on for a while.

    It may seem a little cheesy but a possible way around the 12 regenerations thing could be done within the existing Dr Who cannon. In The Brain of Morbius, the Doctor and Sarah go to the planet Karn not far from Gallifrey and drink the elixir of life, which the Sisterhood of Karn used to share with the Time Lords anyway. Of course, it should never be so simple but who knows, the boffins that be could come up with an interesting episode that sees the doctor drink the elixir and gain another 12 regens.

    @The Silence
    I think your suggestion about the Time Lords artificially restricting the number of regenerations would be the easiest to go with. It’s also the one I’d most like to see, though I think that it’ll be a little bit terrible whichever way you do it if we get to the Thirteenth Doctor’s last episode and they suddenly say “Oh, by the way, did you know that I now have more regenerations?” They’ll have to build it in for at least half a series.
