BBC Worldwide have today confirmed that they are teaming up with independent game developer Three Rings to create the first ever online multiplayer Doctor Who game!

The game, entitled Worlds in Time, will launch later in the year, and will be free to play all around the world, with fans entering the TARDIS to be set a “pulse-pounding” challenge by the Doctor. Players will help him “defend civilized culture against infamous enemies”, exploring new worlds and encountering many alien races along the way.

Players will be able to socialise during the game, building up a global community of fans.

“Worlds in Time will be a free-to-play multiplayer online game that invites players to save the universe by using their wits to solve time-bending puzzles,” explained Robert Nashak, EVP of Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide. ”Three Rings is the ideal team for this groundbreaking creative partnership. Not only are they visionaries in the online gaming space, they are lifelong Doctor Who fans with a passion for delivering the level of quality that our players will expect and deserve.”

Daniel James, CEO Three Rings, added: “Our goal with Worlds in Time is to capture the imaginative spirit and depth of the series, whilst being fun and easy to play for all ages.”

As long as it actually IS available worldwide. I’m still steamed at the half-baked way the Adventure Games were handled. Not the fact they weren’t immediately available worldwide, but the fact that when they did get released outside the UK, they only made the Windows version available, leaving international Mac users disenfranchised. I’m hoping this is browser-based so we don’t end up with Worlds in Time being made available only for Windows users (even though most of the online games of this nature I know of are multi-platform like Second Life).

The best news all year provided it is an actual game rather than something like Three Ring’s Puzzle Pirates.

Our Gaming News site will be watching this develop. It’s safe to say we’re likely not talking about a proper MMO here, the developer and the BBC’s budget assures us of that.

Having said that, I’m prepared to watch how things develop.

Despite Three Rings Design being an American developer, the CEO is British, so he knows what Doctor Who means in the UK

Just to be more specific on what I said, obviously there’s nothing wrong with Americans, American Doctor Who fans or American developers, no way, what I meant was that the CEO being British and Doctor Who being British is a good thing for any potential MMO.

I’m skeptical, admittedly, but I want this to work
