Matt Smith has revealed that he would “love” to see a multi-Doctor episode for the 50th anniversary in 2013.

Speaking to Newsarama.com, the actor explained: “There hasn’t been any official talk about it. That’s still over a year away. But I’d love for it to happen. How amazing would it be to see Tom Baker?! Can you imagine just seeing him back in the scarf, man? And Paul McGann is a great actor. I say bring back Chris and Dave, too! How many Doctors can we get into one story?!”

He added: “Imagine if there were 5 or 6 of us and we all look at and judge each other.”

Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy has previously said that he would be “delighted” to be involved in one, while David Tennant recently said that a return isn’t “impossible”.

    a multi doctor episode is a must, BUT whilst i appreciate Eccleston and Tennent, lets be realistic with who majour who’ers want to see.

    we want, the Bakers, Davidson, McCoy, Mganne, as priority, maybe it could be a special animated CGI animated adventure bringing back all 11 doctors.

    I’d like to see story with the First Doctor. Shouldn’t be difficult to recast. And it doesn’t have to be 1st Doc as an old man. He led a long life, so wouldn’t it be cool to see 1st Doctor as a younger person.

    Well, they did “The Five Doctors” as the twentieth-anniversary special. (The 25th was “Silver Nemesis” — for the silver anniversary, naturally — which was pretty good but not as epic.) It would be so awesome to do a 50th anniversary special bringing back many of the classic cast. Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and of course the incumbent, Matt Smith. The Eight Doctors! It’s been a while since they’ve done a multi-doctor story (excluding “Time Crash”, which was pretty short) — it’d be cool to see one again. I’m ambivalent about recasting the first three; Richard Hurndall was great as the First Doctor, but he wasn’t William Hartnell; he inevitably played it differently. It could work. It might not. In any case, I eagerly await whatever they come up with!

    I’m really not a huge McCoy fan; that being said, I’d love to see as many of the other past Doctors return for the 50th Anniversary as possible… The thought of Colin Baker and Christopher Eccleston playing off each other puts a smile on my face, so does a “What”-off between Tom Baker and David Tennant. I’m also looking forward to a little conversation between Peter Davison and Arthur Darvil… they *will* still have Rory in the show, won’t they? (I hope.)

    Christopher Eccleston has already said he won’t do it. It’s very difficult to have a story with 7 leads anyway. The Five Doctors just about managed 4. Much better to just have a Smith/Tennant team up I think.
    Also, it just wouldn’t be the same with the Bakers in particular. They look so different to when they were on the show. I know about the Timey Wimey explanation but it still wouldn’t feel right.

    @Michael
    I agree that it wouldn’t feel right with those who have changed so much. I reckon the ones who could get away with it are: Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, and obviously David Tennant. The Six Doctors. That would be AMAZING.

    Oh, and surely Moffat would make it work. It could be a multi-part tale, with enough narrative for everyone.

    I couldn’t imagine someone else playing any of the first three Docs either – and yes, I’ve seen The Five Doctors!

    How about a multi-companion story?

    ok. heres my idea. you reast doctors 1 – 3, 2 & 3 can be played by david troughton and sean pertwee. no probs. 11 hour long episodes with the ‘umbrella’title of ‘the eleven doctors’. episode one. the doctor is having problems remembering stuff from his past. its just not right. he remembers being in his first body battling, say, ice warriors. his second self and zygons. its all wrong and he knows it. he goes back to a time in his first body, and corrects it. then episode 2, he does the same and so on. doctors 4 onwards are played by the actual actor, baker thru tennant. episode 11 sees all 11 together in the tardis. hows that for a season?

    I think Sylvestor McCoy and Colin Baker would work great together, and I’d love to see Peter Davison and Tennant working together. I think Smith would really do better with Pertwee, and Tom Baker’s his own Doctor. It would be nice to bring back the 1st Doctor, but frankly I question whether that would ever happen. We haven’t seen him in a long time- it would be so difficult for an actor to play him well.

    ok, they got lucky with richard hurndall, but i really think its possible twice. paul freeman, for instance.

    I think it would be a fair explanation that after regeneration,each doctor is maintained in a sort of memory form somewhere in the doctors head. over time they grow old and eventually fade to echoes of the past. This could explain the aging of actors. The first three doctors could maintain a presence from voices that guide the other characters, using qoutes from old episodes.

    @The silence That idea is great but it has already been done by Big Finish who have used Jon Pertwee in one of their audio plays!
    I see a lot of people on here indicating that other actors should play the parts of earlier Doctors but I think this should be avoided. Honesty, who on here could think that the 10th Doctor could be played by anone other than David Tennant, I doubt there would be many if any! Perhaps the best idea is to do an animated adventure (similar to the kind done for Farscape) and use quotes from back episodes.

    @Steve
    I think they meant the actors who have passed away should be re-cast (Doctors 1, 2, and 3), not the still living ones :)

    I would personally love to see Tom Baker, David Tennant, and Matt Smith. To me they’re the Doctors with the biggest personalities, and the ones who could make a truly hilarious and memorable 50th anniversary. There are always timey-wimey explanations for Tom Baker’s aging.

    I reckon the First Doctor could in theory be recast with a younger actor playing the Doctor in his early years. Recasting wouldn’t feel too weird since he’s the only version of the Doctor who actually physically aged. Then Paul McGann and David Tennant. And that’ll be your lot I think.

    e.p I think Steve might have understood what was meant, but he’s trying to indicate how it would look to people who’ve grown up with and/or are familiar with those portrayals.

    Personally I don’t understand the need to have another multi-doctor story. There are so many and it would be fraught with problems now. Also the different Doctors present something of a mixed bag. I can’t see Tom Baker and his immediate successors sharing the same stage.

    There are so many other possibilities out there (in the world of imagination.) I hope for something more imaginative, which might not exclude some or all of the old actors coming back – but not necessarily as the Doctor…
