New episode synopsis for ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’ released
An intriguing synopsis for the next episode of Doctor Who – Let’s Kill Hitler – has been released by the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival!
The episode will kick off the highly anticipated second half of Series 6 on BBC One in the autumn, and is to be screened at the festival, to an audience of senior television figures, on Friday 26th August.
Read the synopsis for ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’ below!
In the desperate search for Melody Pond, the TARDIS crash lands in 1930s Berlin, bringing the Doctor face to face with the greatest war criminal in the Universe. And Hitler. The Doctor must teach his adversaries that time travel has responsibilities – and in so doing, learns a harsh lesson in the cruelest warfare of all.
The overview itself poses some new questions. What could be “the greatest war criminal in the Universe”, if not Hitler? And what “harsh lesson” is the Doctor about to learn…?
Have your say below, but please don’t discuss information/details obtained from filming reports. The comments are for speculation based on what we have learned from the synopsis above and episodes that have already aired.
Did you enjoy the mid-series finale? Discuss the climax and its cliffhanger…
So a Doc solo episode? No Amy and Rory??
@TWWL
Yes, but TE knows all there is to know so let him have it ;)
I’m glad, actually, that the episode isn’t just going to be about Hitler and the Nazis. I was hoping it wouldn’t be actually, because I think the whole World War 2 thing has been done to death, not just in Doctor Who but a couple of other sci-fi shows too.
I’ll have to watch “A Good Man Goes To War” again because it’s been a while and I thought I remembered the Doctor leaving without Amy and Rory.
It’s interesting how it says the Doctor comes face to face with the greatest war criminal in the Universe and Hitler. That is what I’m most interested about but I have a theory about who Kovarian could possibly be but I doubt it but as she appears in that episode I’m thinking the Master in disguise but I’m not sure about that.
I was let down by GMGTW after the synopsis or rather it gave me the impression that the episode would be very different to what it was. However I don’t care and this brief summary is really interesting :D finding out more about Kovarian and why she wants to take down the doctor as well as “responsibilities”. If Moffat can continue to write as well as he has done in his three episodes so far, can pull off a story with Nazis without being offensive and can carry on moving forward this epic story ark we will be in for a real treat!
It’s also interesting that the Tardis crashes (again) in 1930s Berlin, because World War 2 didn’t start until 1939, so it’s either going to be right at the start of the war or before the war
Do you think the greatest war criminal could be him from the future? Or Melody?
@JC
Well, that’s just it, isn’t it? For killing Hitler to have any effect, you’ve got to do it before the Nazis start killing. Ideally you’ve got to do it before they start passing laws at all, but that would put you right back in 1932, which I doubt they’ll do. But Kristallnacht, perhaps?
@Rose Weasley
Or Kovarian?
Either way, this episode sounds far deeper than its frivolous title might suggest (not knocking the title, by the way – it deserves its own show. Just the title. Just those words, onscreen). It also sounds more Doctor Who-ish than I’d previously been thinking, i.e. it’s not just a historical jaunt.
Oh, and I’m glad Melody’s not being forgotten!
@Peter
Eh? I know just as much as everyone else does thanks to the friendly people over at Doctor Who Spoilers who compile all of the necessary information. Which is why I can’t reply to TWWL’s comment.
@Rose Weasley
I like the idea of that: the greatest war criminal in the entire universe happens to be a simple, (slightly) ordinary (half) human baby.
This sounds like the doc will be on his own but I was reading DWM and I think river is going to be in it I think it might be a bit wierd to have an episode with just her in it though and no other companion though dont get me wrong I love River! I’m not sure what the point of my ramble was I’ll get back to you!
@JC
JC — you are correct, that the Doctor left Amy & Rory behind at the end of “A Good Man Goes to War”, telling River to take them back home (and presumably also to take the Silurian and her human companion back home to their proper time as well).
BTW, random thought, but anybody else think that the Silurian and her human companion are totally tailor-made for fanfiction? :-D
Still have to wonder if it’s Kovarian’s plan to kill Hitler prior to the start of his reign of terror, and it’s the Doctor who has to save Hitler! (One of those “fixed points” of time/history that the 10th Doctor was always going on about.) I think that might make an interesting dilemma for the Doctor to deal with.
@Professor Zed
Not only will it be a dilemma for the Doctor, but for the audience as well. Ooh those Doctor Who writers love tackling the big philosophical questions don’t they? Sounds like a great episode! :)
The ‘greatest war criminal in the Universe’ wouldn’t happen to be the War Chief, by any chance?
Just thinking. Matt Smith, 1930s Berlin. Did anyone else watch Christopher And His Kind? :D
I’m thinking that “the greatest war criminal in the Universe” is probably the Doctor himself. He did effectively commit mass-genocide at the end of the Time War.
I don’t think Kovarian is an old enemy such as the Master, I believe we’ll find out exactly why she wants her “weapon” against the Doctor in the second half of this series. And to be honest, if we don’t i’ll be rather disappointed!
As for this episode, it pretty much tells us that “the greatest war criminal in the Universe” is also a time-traveler, whether it’s a vortex manipulator or something else, I don’t know. But whoever this is, the Doctor apparently teaches them about the responsibilities of time-travel. So surely a non-time-traveler is out of the question? I sure look forward to finding out.
@Tom Beasley I think your probably right that it is the doctor himself is the greatest war criminal or it could be River/Melody. Has anyone else noticed that the Doc seemsmore angry and seems to care less about people dying and seems I dont know….. more dark or something
The greatest war criminal of all time and Hitler. COuld this greatest criminal be River? We still need to know who the good man is that she kills! I too have read that River will be in this episode. It’s all looking rather fabulous!
@Calli Arcale
Definitely. Are you a fanfic writer then?
@Theta Sigma
Oh yes! Loved it.
@Professor Zed
I think you’re probably along the right lines. If you think about the massive effects that the Second World War had on Earth, then it simply has to be a fixed point. And wouldn’t that be a wonderful reason for Kovarian to want a weapon against the Doctor: to make the universe better. Stop all the genocides, cure all the illnesses. And the Doctor has to fight for the plagues and the wars of human history to survive.
Right, if that doesn’t happen, I am so writing it in the form of fanfiction.
