Goodbye, hello, and then some! – Discuss Series 7
As you’ll all know, filming for the brand new series of Doctor Who is now underway and, although it won’t actually grace our screens until the autumn, we have already been given plenty to talk about, and here’s where you can do it!
In Series 7, we know that Amy and Rory will be bidding farewell to the TARDIS after “a final encounter with the Weeping Angels”, and the terrifying statues won’t be the only familiar foes making a comeback, as the Daleks will also be making an appearance!
As soon as the Ponds have left the building in Episode 5 (scenes for which will be filmed in New York…), the Doctor will be meeting a new and “very different” friend in this year’s Christmas Special. The new companion will be portrayed by Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, who will lead the Doctor to “his merriest dance yet”. Hm…
@Steve
Thank you! We may have our disagreements about Moffat, but we’re certainly on the same page about this one.
I’m not a fan of Doctor-companion romance. Of all the people he’s been paired with in the new series, River makes the most sense to me (similar species, comparable intelligence, strong personality, possibly comparable lifespan), but there’s still a small part of me that wishes it was still just the madman in love with his box. (As you might guess, I loved “The Doctor’s Wife.)
So this is the point I’m starting from. Then they go and make Ten incredibly human (didn’t love that either, but I can understand because of the reasons behind his regeneration and what he was wishing/needing at that moment), then make him reciprocate Rose’s feelings. While I didn’t love it, I was fine with it. The Doctor was vulnerable–it made sense.
And then the Doctor and Rose are separated. Instead of mourning for a while and then, as the strong (and possibly in love) characters they were, paying tribute to one another and their relationship by having fantastic lives, they both wallow in despair. Rose immediately starts to build a Dimension Cannon, something she knows will break apart the walls of the universe. The Doctor forces Martha into all manner of horrible, demeaning situations and eventually gets her family tortured for a year, but never appreciates her because he’s so focused on Rose.
Whatever I feel about Doctor-companion romance, this story could have been a positive model and an affirmation of two very strong characters. Instead, it became a cliched love story that disregarded both morality and character development.
My apologies for the rant…I seem to have strong opinions on this topic. Odd.
@Steve
Yes but it wasn’t as if Sarah Jane was trapped in a parallel world. She was dropped off in Aberdeen because the Doctor was heading to Gallifrey at a time when humans weren’t allowed. That is a different situation to the 10th Doctor and Rose…….
Series 7 has been great! I especially love Amy, her and Rory are my favorite couple ever! I even voted them as best romantic relationship on the television without pity Tubey awards!
@zoey
Series 7 hasn’t even been shown yet, it’s starting in autumn this year!
@Patrick
Just a little bit, yeah! :) to try and compare the two exits is silly.
yeah, series 7 hasn’t even come out yet, how come some people have seen it? Oh! I am gonna miss Amy an Rory when they leave:’( I’m sure Jenna L coleman will be great though!
@face of awesome
There was a comic-con in San Diego and part of series 7 had shown clips of that series :)
@Soph
@Patrick
cool, thanks!Sucks living in england!
@face of awesome
well i live in england as well so know how ya feel lol.
@face of awesome
@Patrick
But if we didn’t live in England we’d not have Doctor Who first? And then that would suck even more! :P
I am one of the ones who is hoping there isn’t an Amy backlash for the new companion… Because Rose was the first ever companian in the new era of DW maybe that’s why there was such a backlash?
I like the companians to have the same relationship that Donna had with the Doctor.. A best friend, rather than how it was with Rose :)
Any who… I think it is time for Amy and Rory to go, even if they will be sorely missed, it has been 3 years!! Time for a change! I cannot wait!
@Patrick Your right, Sarah was dropped off on the other side of the country, at least Rose was dropped of with her family!
Looks likely that Series Seven will begin 1st September (The Sun’s TV magazine has the show listed as beginning in September whilst it is also absent from this week’s BBC Media Centre update).
Seriously guys? They had nothing. Not even a unique style. Not even a style clothes-wise. They were just Rose & Mickey again just like River Song is just Captain Jack – they’re even both immortal.
Btw, Amy isn’t going anywhere, they’re just going to call her something else & she’ll have brown hair.
Steven Muppet is clearly not cut-out to write more than 1 episode a season. And have you seen the line up of other “writers” this season? It’s the same tired, old, uncreative hacks that Russell T Davies used to over-use. Chibnall has never written a decent story. Hungry Earth was a rip-off of Frontios – even the title is a line from Frontios.
What else is “new” this season? What other spoilers are there? Oh yeah that’s right, a monster from the original series is returning. How original. They’ve been doing that since 2005. They are totally dependant on ransacking everything from DW from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.
Most banal, unoriginal, repetitive show ever. It’s nothing like DW, but calling it DW allows them to rip-off everything from DW.
Dinosaurs on a Spaceship? It might as well be called Snakes on a Plane. Will the Christmas Specials come to an end? When will the BBC wake up & do its job properly?
@LegoDaleks I am impressed, someone else who can see the truth and will speak out. Well done. Personally I don’t think SM has any new ideas for the show and will make a complete mess of the 50th anniversary. The first 5 episodes all look like rip offs to me, even the titles are blatant rip offs!
Hey where is the countdown clock this year?
@Steve
No, just someone who doesn’t like it, others do. We all have different opinions.
@LegoDaleks
Like I say, we’re all entitled to our own opionons.
Not keen on the ‘Steven Muppet’ thing. No need to get personal just because you don’t enjoy a TV programme.
@TWWL
I agree with the sentiment that SM is a 1 trick pony, who during RTD era produced some good scripts but only generally 1 or 2 a year. He does have a habit of ripping other writers off. Pond Life indeed. Som one should call for Barbara!
So excited for tonight!! 7:20 is gonna be awesome!! Don’t wanna see Amy and Rory leave though, I wish Karen and Arthur the best in the future though!! :D glad 2 be back here!! :D
