Rose Tyler named best companion ever
September 10th, 2014
Rose Tyler has reigned supreme in an online popularilty poll to determine the greatest Doctor Who companion of all time.
The shop girl turned Earth defender – who travelled with the Ninth and Tenth Doctors – was portrayed by Billie Piper and made her most recent appearance in the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, last November.
The survey was conducted by Radio Times and received over 2.3 million votes. The runner up was Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman in the series and its spin off Torchwood.
Do you agree with the result? If not, who is your ultimate companion? Let us know below…
I definitely DO NOT agree. I don’t like Rose at all. My favourite is Clara, but I don’t think she should’ve won either. In my opinion there was only one worthy winner of this poll and that was Sarah Jane Smith.
I don’t really have a favourite companion, I’ve never felt that connected to any of them.
I know there are a lot of people that don’t like Rose Tyler, but I can understand the result. If you’re a Revived Series fan, Rose Tyler was the first companion you knew.
I’d agree with Mia to a point though, Sarah Jane Smith and Elisabeth Sladen were special.
That poll made me vomit so hard I ruptured my colon.
It had to be fixed. Either that or the fandom is broken.
I can’t say I am not surprised. It would be hard for most viewers of the current series to have any other opinion. I watched the 50th special release this week and the “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide” was so biased towards new Who, you would be forgiven for thinking the series was only 9 years old!
Really? You all think the Rose character was good enough to carry her own show like Sarah Jane Smith? Sarah was THE BEST COMPANION there ever was! She gave not one but two Doctors what for and she never lost what made her great! She was plucky yet human! She didn’t make gog-goo eyes at the doctor and she wasn’t led around by her hormones! She was a professional woman not a starry eyed girl! How about you all get a clue and watch Classic Who before you vote for someone to become the best companion of all time!
I think it’s OK to have strong opinions, I certainly do, but everyone’s opinion is different and there’s nothing wrong with that.
As I said in my first post, I don’t really have a favourite companion but I will agree that Sarah Jane Smith was an important part of Doctor Who history. I’ll always remember that poignant moment in “School Reunion” when Sarah Jane walks into the cupboard and sees the Tardis. That haunting music as she backs out and the 10th Doctor is standing behind her was an amazing moment.
Despite how Grace feels about Rose, I also liked how Sarah Jane and Rose finally get on and start cracking up, whilst the Doctor’s completely oblivious.
DOCTOR: How’s it going?
(Sarah Jane and Rose keep laughing.)
DOCTOR: What? Listen, I need to find out what’s programmed inside these.
(Hysteria is setting in.)
DOCTOR: What? Stop it!
