Today is a special day in the Doctor’s personal calendar because it marks the anniversary of his first televised adventure, An Unearthly Child.

On this day back in 1963, at 5:16pm on BBC One, the TARDIS materialised on the small screen for the first time as viewers were given their first glimpse into the weird and wonderful world of the now iconic Time Lord.

51 years and over 800 episodes later, the series is still going strong with an estimated global audience of 70 million.

It’s also been exactly one year since The Day of the Doctor, the momentous adventure which was screened simultaneously on TV and in cinemas in over 90 countries. The 50th anniversary was a remarkable celebration and you can relive all of the festivities here.

The Doctor will be back on our screens next month but see how it all began for him below…

And he hasn’t stopped running since! Here’s to another 51 years, Doctor – we salute you!

Can I just make it clear to Steven Moffatt – this is the 51st year of Doctor Who and not the second year of the Clara Show!

Happy Birthday Doctor Who. I have great memories and the series has helped me through some tough times.

Celebrated this week in style with a few of the greatest episodes, with Remembrance of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, Night of the Doctor and of course The Day of The Doctor, with a documentary and a tribute video to top it off!

It’s all reminded me why I love this show so much! Happy B-day Doctor!

Despite how bad Series 8 was, Doctor Who was amazing before that and so I pay tribute to it on its 51st Birthday and also thank it for Torchwood Series 1-3.

You were great once, maybe you will be again one day.

@JC Can I add, thanks for the SJA as well. She was the best and there will never be anyone else as good!

I’m watching Classic Who episodes (Third Doctor) and I am just amazed at how good the writing used to be! The show had character, heart, and so many great stars! It made us care not just about the Doctor but about the problems the Doctor was trying to alleviate! If only Moffat would watch these episodes he might realize the potential for his show. This show is about more than the villains and Clara, its about making the audience aware of the problems going on in the world and the creative ways they can be solved. If we have 51 more years I hope we get a better person at the wheel!
