John Barrowman has revealed that he still remains hopeful that Captain Jack will return to Doctor Who one day.

The character was last seen in the series in The End of Time, Part Two and has been off our screens altogether since 2011 when Miracle Day, the fourth series of his popular spin off Torchwood, was aired to mixed reviews. Despite the hiatus, though, he is adamant that the BBC would be “very silly not to bring him back”. “I would be more than happy to go back if they asked me,” he told the Ipswich Star. “But I never have been, and I don’t know if I will be.”

He added: “The popularity of Jack hasn’t decreased. It keeps growing and one person who is keeping him alive is me, because I’m constantly promoting him. One day, he will return.”

The actor will star in a new Torchwood audio series which Big Finish will release this year.

He was supposed to be back for A Good Man Goes To War, but Torchwood: American Crap happened.

Again, it’s a repercussion of Miracle Day, the 1996 movie of the Torchwood world with the half-human Doctor replaced by Jack’s blood making the hated American bloke immortal …

Oh, and sealing its Torchwood’s future by saying that the people behind Miracle Day and PhiCorp had a “Plan B”, meaning we’d be forced to go through Miracle Day 2 to see more Torchwood.

No, I think Capt. Jack’s a great character, but Miracle Day is a mill stone around his neck now. Unless they go back to the end of The End of Time Part 2 and erase Miracle Day from canon, it’s difficult to see Capt. Jack in the same way.

Don’t get me wrong Scott, I don’t mean to sound Anti-American in any way and I just realised that’s how I could have sounded, much to my discomfort.

It was more the decision to have the Starz Network involved in making Miracle Day, setting it in America and adding Americans to the Torchwood team. As you’ve recently seen, before Miracle Day, Torchwood had been set in Wales and England and it had a very distinct feel to it.

Miracle Day changed the setting and the team dynamic a lot and I think setting it in a different country took something away from it. It was almost like Torchwood wasn’t ready for such a dramatic shift. In addition to that, one story played out over ten episodes, which was far too long winded too.

Referring to the “hated American bloke” was an unfortunate choice of words and was based entirely on the fact I couldn’t remember his name rather than the fact he was American. I’ve looked it up now, Rex Matheson. I think that irked a lot of people that didn’t like the new members of Torchwood, especially Rex, when he was seemingly made immortal.

So yeah, I need to consider my comments more before I submit.

Bore, bore, bore! Your time is over now, move on. I want Lela to come back, Tegan to come back, even Donna! That will never happen, so why should Captain Boring???

I literally just finished and was thinking they better not end here and I do agree that miracle day was the the best and that there is a plan b but what if plan b is not another miracle day

John has, when asked, said he wants Captain Jack back, but it’s Iantos fans that has kept the show visible. How you may ask, well just go to Cardiff and see Ianots Shrine, still going strong.

I really admire Jack (but I like much more in DW and TW s1&2) and I admired too with the eyes of Ianto (the real audience pov) Without Ianto is really difficult for me, and not for Jack. RTD became TW in Gwen´s show, with Jack as supporting charater (and he´s the leader!!!!! no need Jack) How can be Captain Jack in DW with the fiasco of MD? Because I agree, Miracle Day becomed a mill stone around Captain Jack´s neck. Anyway, John is fantastic in Arrow, and i thind he is much more valued in that show that never was in DW / TW (In these shows have GREAT characters: Jack, Ianto, two of them, but it seems don´t know to do with them)
