Maisie Williams, who guest starred in Series 9 of Doctor Who as Ashildr, has revealed who she would like to see cast as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Speaking to the Evening Standard at their British Film Awards, where the Game of Thrones actress was named as this year’s Rising Star, the actress called for a black actor to take on the role of the Time Lord’s next incarnation, citing Idris Elba as her preferred choice. “I’m all for Idris,” she said. “I think he would be really cool. A female Doctor would be incredible, too. I would definitely take it for the team!”

This isn’t the first time that the Luther actor has been put forward to fulfil the guise of scifi’s most iconic hero. Back in 2013 he was a bookies’ favourite to take over from Matt Smith and responded to the press speculation by saying that he was “proud” to even be considered. With rumours that Peter Capaldi will be stepping down after Series 10 next year, Tom Weston-Jones has also recently entered the equation as a potential successor.

    1) He doesn’t look Doctor-y to me
    2) It’s so bloody rude how people are trying to pressure Peter Capaldi out of the role with this kind of talk, it’s disgusting

I suppose it depends how you feel about the 12th Doctor. Unfortunately, I barely relate to this incarnation of the Doctor. I’ve known six Doctors now and the 12th Doctor is different enough that I can’t connect with him. As such, when Peter Capaldi decides to moves on, I suspect I’ll be able to move on quickly and easily.

Having said that, if there are attempts to actively badger him out of the role, that would be quite harsh. He’s an actor playing a role and he’s a Doctor Who fan to boot. As such, I think the fans actively campaigning against him would be in bad taste.

Patrick, there is no official word that he has decided to leave. Just constant news stories reporting rumours of it. People keep talking about “the next Doctor”, in the media and to his face – I wouldn’t be surprised if he left just because of that. He must feel so unwelcome with all this. It’s revolting behaviour.
