Big Finish to helm Series 5 of Torchwood
It has been confirmed that Torchwood will be returning for a fifth series in the form of a Big Finish audio range overseen by its original creator, Russell T Davies.
Aliens Along Us will pick up where Series 4 – Miracle Day – left off back in 2011, with John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Kai Owen reprising their respective roles as Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams. Tom Price will also be back as PC Andy, alongside an ensemble of new characters including Mr. Colchester, Tyler, Ng and Orr, as played by Paul Clayton, Jonny Green, Alexandria Riley and Sam Béart.
Series 5 – launching this August - will be released in three boxsets and will see Jack and Gwen restarting Torchwood in Cardiff. But with something terrible happening to the city, do they need a new approach? And can they save Cardiff from an invasion that’s already lost?
James Goss, producer, said: “This is an ambitious series for Big Finish, which Russell has been wonderfully involved in. There are familiar old faces, of course, but there will also be a few surprises, including an appearance by someone who just has to be, has to be dead…”

Despite being a Torchwood fan (before Miracle Day), I’ve never listened to any of the Big Finish stories and I doubt I’ll start now.
This is mainly because I tend to get bored whilst listening to audio books, but I also find them too expensive. To hear three new stories with the 10th Doctor and Donna, for example, I would have to pay £30. If I wanted to listen to each of the Torchwood stories released on CD prior to this, I would have to spend upwards of £180.
I voted that Torchwood won’t be the same as an audio series, because I feel that something is always lost in translation, both figuritively and literally.
Even though i’m not really a Torchwood fan I am very happy to hear this since I love Big Finish productions who are just wonderfull at creating and expanding Doctor Who lore and practically allways make top quality stories so any Torchwood fans can rest easy knowing the returning show is in safe hands and i’m sure it’ll be a treat seeing, or in this case hearing Jack back in action and if it can help explain if Jack really does become the Face of Boe then i’m all for it!
I’d prefer seeing Gwen, Jack, and well Rhys return to my computer screen! No matter how well a story is told it requires way too much imagination to make it work. I know. I tried and this failed for me!
I say use the vortex manipulator, go back in time, and please forget Miracle (Maniacal) Day ever happened! Oh, and JC is right! I don’t think I should have to take out a personal loan from my bank just to buy your books!
