steven-peter-discuss-the-first-doctors-return

Whilst flying the Doctor Who flag at San Diego Comic-Con, Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi chatted to EW about the forthcoming return of the First Doctor.

The original (you might say…) will be coming face to face with his incumbent incarnation in this year’s Christmas Special, Twice Upon a Time, which Steven described as an “interesting” dynamic. “He was so different to the man he is now, and to the woman he’s about to become,” he said. “David Bradley is an extraordinary resemblance to William Hartnell. It’s an astonishing recreation of his performance.”

Peter, meanwhile, revealed that the multi-Doctor adventure felt like his journey with the series was “coming full circle” as he prepares to step down from the iconic role in the same episode. He explained: “It’s wonderful for me, because he’s the first Doctor I remember. The show started when I was 5 years old and I have this distant memory of this strange, grumpy but magical man in the TARDIS, and David captures that essence so beautifully.”

thats-a-wrap-on-this-years-christmas-special

Filming on this year’s Christmas Special has officially wrapped in Cardiff which means that Peter Capaldi has filmed his final scenes as the Doctor.

Various members of the show’s crew have taken to Twitter to toast the actor, as well as showrunner Steven Moffat, on completing their last episode, which will air on Christmas Day. The accompanying wrap party was “bittersweet” according to casting director Andy Pryor, while series brand manager Edward Russell revealed that the festivities included a video message from Christopher Eccleston. Fantastic!

As confirmed in the closing moments of the Series 10 finale, the festive adventure will star David Bradley as the First Doctor, and recent rumours have suggested that his won’t be the only familiar face returning to bid the Twelfth Doctor adieu. We’ll have to wait and see what other shocks and surprises lie in store, but our first sneak peak of it will be debuted at San Diego Comic-Con later this month (23rd July), so that’s something to look forward to.

Of course, this does mean that the Thirteenth Doctor may have already filmed his/her first scene, as the era of Chris Chibnall begins. But who will it be? As always, only time will tell…

the-doctors-will-return-at-christmas

As revealed at the end of last night’s Series 10 finale (and in keeping with recent tabloid reports…), this year’s Christmas Special will be a multi-Doctor adventure featuring David Bradley as the First Doctor.

The actor – who previously portrayed William Hartnell in the 50th anniversary biopic An Adventure in Space and Time – made his surprise appearance in the closing moments of The Doctor Falls, which saw the Time Lord’s current incarnation being taken in the TARDIS to an unknown location as his latest regeneration began. Cue the closing titles…

The festive adventure will be Peter Capaldi’s final episode as the Doctor, as well as Steven Moffat’s last story as showrunner, and it looks like they’ll both be going out with a mighty bang as the past, present and future collide… literally! But what did you make of the chilling cliffhanger, and what are your hopes and expectations for the Christmas Special?

Above – The past and present collide as the Twelfth and First Doctors unite, this Christmas.

The Doctors will return at Christmas! Are you excited to see the Twelfth and First Doctors unite for Peter Capaldi's final adventure?

Peter Capaldi has confirmed that he has already filmed his regeneration scene, describing his final on screen moments as “explosive”.

This is most intriguing, especially as the Christmas Special – billed as his final episode – isn’t set to start filming until July. It would suggest that the Twelfth Doctor regenerates sooner than expected, which is certainly what the recent Series 10 trailer would have us to believe. Whenever it happens, the actor told the Sydney Morning Herald that his incarnation “goes out a fighter”.

“It was a strange day,” he continued. “It feels sad to be saying goodbye to everybody I’ve worked with for 3 years. I’m sentimental about it. Soon, I won’t be Doctor Who anymore.”

So, what devilish trick has Moffat got up his sleeves for his final regeneration? We dread to think, but the outgoing showrunner teases fans that it will contain “all our trauma needs”…

who-invades-the-southbank-ahead-of-series-10

In 2015 the Twelfth Doctor journeyed to Abbey Road, the year before that it was Big Ben, and this year he has set his sights on another iconic London landmark.

The TARDIS materialised on the Southbank yesterday alongside a stunning piece of street artwork by 3D Joe & Max. It was all to promote the show’s long awaited return to our screens this weekend, as Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie were also on hand to check out the magnificent alien landscape. Pretty cool, huh?! Over 50 years later and he still knows how to make a scene…
