Freema Agyeman appeared as a guest on The Alan Titchmarsh Show earlier this afteroon to discuss her current role as Alesha Phillips in Law & Order: UK.

During the interview, the actress briefly commented on her time spent in the TARDIS as Martha Jones, admitting that she doesn’t mind being associated with the role. ”It’s definitely not a negative thing to be associated with,” she explained. ”I have been really lucky to have been in an amazingly big British institution.”

She went on to echo her previous comments regarding the future of her character.

“In terms of the world and the character, at one point I was going to Torchwood, but then Law & Order came up,” she said. ”I think as an actress you need to diversify.”

What are you talking about? Rose was the second-biggest Mary Sue in the history of Who. (The biggest was Adric.)

I’m feeling old, hearing people call the days of Rose, Martha, and Donna “the old days”.

BTW, don’t get me wrong — I liked Adric, and I liked Rose too. But sometimes it shows when an author is investing too much of themselves in a character. Adric could have been a very interesting character, but “Full Circle” was a tough place to have to start out. He was much better when Terrence Dicks was writing him. Many later writers just didn’t know what to do with him, though.

Rose didn’t have quite that problem, mostly because of the tight rein of Davies. (It’s interesting, having the executive producer and script editor be the same person. Definitely affects things.) She had a clearly defined role. But it got way too big by the end, because her creator got to keep writing her all the way to the end. Plus side: she had a better end than Adric did. Down side: her end was ridiculously over-the-top.

Amy’s fine, IMHO. She’s no Sarah Jane, but then, who is? ;-)
